  • What have you done for me lately?

The problem with Edwards is that he voted to give Bush authorization to go into Iraq - just as Hillary did. Clearly a mistake. So harping on her five-year-old vote brings up that uncomfortable fact. Obama wasn't in the Senate, and in the past has admitted that he wasn't in a position where he would have to justify his vote. Still, that is all in the past. I want to know what the candidates are going to do now. Edwards is clearly trying to build support among those who want to withdraw immediately - with no plan for how this will be accomplished.

For all his attacks on Hillary, Edwards really seems like the pie-in-the-sky candidate who will say anything his base wants to hear. I'm starting to think that those who want to "get out now" are little different than those who wanted to "get in now." While I don't agree that the Middle East will disintegrate overnight, I do believe that the process will require a lot of planning and oversight, and we need to start NOW - not in January 2009. The Bushies have gotten us into a terrible situation - not Hillary (who, by the way, took a lot of flack from the righties for merely asking for a withdrawl plan). I wish the candidates would move beyond five-year-old votes and start to discuss exactly HOW we disengage from Iraq. We might begin with a summit that involves all regional powers, since they have more of a stake in a stable Iraq than we do. But I'm afraid that kind of realistic nuance will not satisfy the red-meat lefties who are going to take their votes and go home if they don't get their way.

  • Had good and bad experiences

I've had good and bad experiences with pet adoption. The bad was with a no-kill private shelter. After I didn't meet their "standards" when I inquired about adopting TWO adult cats, I was truly horrified. I pledged never to give them another dime - and then reconsidered since I know they do perform an often thankless task. I now know that my experience was not unique and that is why these shelters have so many animals. How sad that they make their very difficult task even harder.

On the other hand, I ended up adopting two cats from an MSPCA shelter and also have had good experiences with the local Humane Society. All the workers were wonderful. And there certainly are good private shelters too.
