[Read the article: The leak designed to save Alberto Gonzales]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I don't recall saying I found it tedious. I said, that even supporters of Congress' investigation of Gonz were probably finding it so by now. I would go further in saying that with all the cowardly retreats perpetrated by the people we put in power to end the war and stand up to this admin, this does look more and more like political theatre that will go exactly where the Democrat's much anticipated witholding of war funding went--the trash bin of history.
My main point, again--Greenwald is absolutely right. These people are liars, the proof is televised, recorded and on numerous hard copy records--they've lied under oath and in our nation's publications and broadcasts of record. Somehow, the people who represent us are still unable to do jack crap about it.

Amphetamine and Steroids
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I don't know about you, but I'm pretty upset about amphetamine use, seeing as something like 2/3 of California's violent crimes are committed under its influence.
Oh, but now that Barry Bonds hit his gazillionth home run, that should all be taken care of. Our soldiers will soon be coming back from Iraq, and Iraq's leqislature will convence in a broad coalition that puts to rest all inter-sectarian and ethnic strife. Israel will let Palestinians have a state. The housing bubble will re-inflate, our economy will move away from the precipice of collapse. AIDS, Cholera, Turbucolosis and Cancer will be magically cured in anyone coming in contact with the homerun ball. Blacks and Latinos and Asians, oh, yeah, and women, will have equal access to jobs, justice and education.
Whew! I knew all this time, while the world has been burning, that there was a really good reason why the majority of Americans did nothing but watch sports, and knew nothing about anything but Sports scores and players. There was a good reason why they don't seem to care that their infrastrucre is falling apart, while their cities spend the money on new stadiums. That all the names of stadiums and arenas are corporate logos, why no one on the teams that they fanatically support is from or actually lives in their city, or even metropolitan area. Or that the man who held the record, who stood up to racism when people were still being lynched, and braved insults and epitaphs--not because he was cheating, but because HE WAS BLACK--will now be eclipsed in history by a liar, a cheater and publicity hound.
And that this is the example that we are setting for our children.
Hurray.

Us vs Them
[Read the article: The religious state of Islamic science]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]A decent interview, but this line in the introduction.."may sound sill to us."
Hello. Who the hell is us, these days, anyway? What actually sounds silly to me is all the Americans who are Christian, but don't bother themselves with any of the rules. Say what you like about Islam--that its dogmatic, reactionary, repressive. Perhaps, all this is true in some places. But if there is any indicator with a bigger gap than the economic and technological development between the Muslim world and the Western one, its the one for hypocrisy.

Straight Talk
[Read the article: McCain's selective defense of "traditional marriage"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Yes, McCain is a hypocrite, but I think that Mr. Greenwald's argument falls flat in that he's assuming a biblical definition of traditional marriage. Repulicans have the advantage in the vague language used here and in the common acknowledgement of most of their supporters that adultery and divorce--by their very ubiquity--are also traditional, as long as you are Christian and ask God if its ok. Keep in mind that there was plenty of extra marital shenanigans going on in the Old Testament.
I think it would be interesting to try and look into the heads of Republican voters. They seemed to be not very turned off by hypocrisy, by lying. If you just take a look at right wing television and radio, nothing these guys say is believable. If you ever watch Hannity and Colmes, it takes about one and a half minutes most of the time for right wing pundits to look like idiots beneath Colmes' milquetoast cross examination. I think what attracts Republicans IS the lying and the hypocrisy, for it probably reflects the most salient aspects of their own lives writ large--and the best part is that their heroes are getting away with it...
