"Also, it would be great to know what McCain plans to do, exactly, to turn himself into Hamas' 'worst nightmare' "

--Exactly. Short of carpet bombing the Gaza strip, I don't see how any US administration could make life more hellish for Hamas (or, obviously, the poor Palestinians who elected them to power)than this one has by enabling Israel's blockades and attacks.

    But as for this:

"Is there anyone outside of Lieberman and John Bolton who thinks that what we need are more cartoon-like imperial threats to the world about how we're going to pummel and smash everyone if they don't step into line?"

--I would say that an unfortunately large cross-section of the electorate seems to agree, otherwise McCain would have no support, nor would he make such silly pronouncements. This is just where we disagree, Glenn. You seem to have a more positive view of the people who live and vote in this country. I just don't see a lot of hope, and though I really believed that the Republicans could not possibly reverse their decline, I am feeling more and more concerned about a Republican victory in November.

"By the way, more Palestinians died in the intra-Palestinian fighting following the Hamas apparent victory in the 2006 elections than in the previous 6 years of the al Aqsa intifada."

Where the hell did you get this info? Even the most hardened Israeli propagandist wouldn't make such a proclamation. Nearly five thousand Palestinians have been kill in these six years of Al Aqsa intifiada. I'm not sure what the total number of deaths resulting from intra-factional fighting in Palestine (I'd be surprised if it totaled a hundred for the entire period you're talking about) but if you can find a source that confirms your outrageous claim I suggest you post it asap. Otherwise, you're making supporters of Israeli aggression look even dumber than they usually do.

  • I'll post mine if you post yours...

The Palestine Red Crescent (the Arab affiliate of the Red Cross) has consistently kept track of Palestinian deaths in the territories since 2001. Sorry, if I insulted you. If you're going to make ridiculous claims, make sure that you have at least some kind of propaganda link. Then some of the heat will be off you as a propagandist and you can blame your sources. I don't think anyone has made the kind of claim that you made.

  • Glenn, a little hyperbole...

From the context of your post and of your sources, it seems clear that McCain had an instrumental, and even essential role in passing the MCA. But you overplayed your hand with this phrase:

"After parading around as the righteous opponent of torture, McCain nonetheless endorsed and voted for the MCA, almost single-handedly ensuring its passage."

You can't place all the blame on McCain.

    That's awesome...nice catch...

But as the doomsday alarm grew shrill, few noticed that on this same day in Pennsylvania, 27 percent of Republican primary voters didn’t just tell pollsters they would defect from their party’s standard-bearer; they went to the polls, gas prices be damned, to vote against Mr. McCain. Though ignored by every channel I surfed, there actually was a G.O.P. primary on Tuesday, open only to registered Republicans. And while it was superfluous in determining that party’s nominee, 220,000 Pennsylvania Republicans (out of their total turnout of 807,000) were moved to cast ballots for Mike Huckabee or, more numerously, Ron Paul. That’s more voters than the margin (215,000) that separated Hillary Clinton and Mr. Obama.

If by "smears" you mean accounting of McCain's record, then yes, Glenn does have a habit of making McCain look bad. I think this is less a testament to Glenn's skill than the fact that McCain has so obviously sold out his own hero-narrative for political gain.

  • The world doesn't Need Us

"we are better than you. the world needs us. (because we include einsteins). it doesn't need arabs. the three hundred million of them don't include anyone (try it yourself. see if you can come up with someone other than omar sharif, zogby and suicide bombers) -- david sugarman"

As an Arab I find this to be quite a relief. Now I can quit my job and become an actor (or a pollster or suicide bomber...whatever.)

At the risk of taking you seriously...I'd like to posit two doomsday scenarios that already took place in the past few years.

In one, a rogue nation manipulated weaker powers to invade a country. In that invasion, 8,000 people died. Once occupying the country, that nation undertook actions that have caused the death of tens of thousands and caused a civil war that's not likely to find an end for decades.

In the other, a rogue nation attacked its neighbor and littered its populace with tiny explosive devices that have so far resulted in the deaths and injuries of over a thousand people.

I'm sure you're on top of these threats to humanity, but perhaps your efforts would be better aimed at the calamities that have already (and are) occuring, rather than hypothetical dangers in a hazy future.
