Yes, my mother is from Bogota, my father is from Dura al Q'ara, a village outside of Ramallah. I am Palestinian and Colombian. My name is Jaime Omar Yassin. I live in California, I was born in Oakland, and I voted in the primaries for Barack Obama. If you don't believe me, here is a blog I write...

You'll find all kinds of info about me. And yes, it kind of sucks to be at the center of so many f'd up discourses and policy black holes, thanks for wondering aloud about it. And, also, i don't think I've ever encountered such an immature group of people as I have in this posting space in my entire life.

I am sorry that so few topics touch on your ethnicities, but cheer up, maybe one of your countries will be at the center of a drug war or a military occupation some day. You never know!

  • And now that you mention it...

All of this is pretty amazing, but I actually lived in New Orleans between 92 and 94, and New York between 94 and 2000...and I was in Ramallah during 9-11, that's when the Intifada happened. Maybe I should write a book

I have been a little distressed to note that Glen's responses to posters (including me) have been needlessly rude and overly sarcastic. Its ok to disagree on a point or two but agree on the general premise--that's how I broaden my viewpoints and why I read Greenwald and view the letters on this posting space. But when people pick out just one element or phrase in a comment and heap scorn upon only it--while ignoring the broader points being made--it creates an uncomfortable environment. I was even wondering whether I should post after the drubbing I have received from Greenwald and others here.

I admit I have not always been the most polite person here. Its often hard to keep your cool when you read posts that seem to have the intent of provocation more than anything else. But its a learning curve and I have been doing my best to look at the WHOLE comments of others before I respond. Just sayin.

I agree. But when you let someone know that you think they're being rude, and they tell you that they don't care if it bothers you, as Glenn did in a recent response to one of my posts--in which I essentially agreed with him--that's more than just going against my expectations. That's being purposefully rude. As I've said, I've done it a few times here, but I'm trying to keep a lid on it; I think others could benefit from that approach.

I took a quick look at Nequals posts here and they are a pillar of good grammar, well-constructed arguments and positive commentary. I could only hope to be so polite and constructive in my responses. So I am herein doing my duty and backing up his post in solidarity.

I agree that the situation is much worse in other on line forums.

Glenn Greenwald is not God. I am not interested on what will get me on his bad side, or what will please him. I am interested in interacting in this community: I had the impression that Glenn was also interested in having the community proceed without fear of his retaliation if he doesn't care for someone's views. And whether or not you think in my case Glenn's dismissive tone and rudeness were legitimate, there are others here who are also bringing up this point. If you cared at all about this community, you would support them.

    Fair enough, Glen.

I'm just going to restrict my response to your posts yesterday. It wasn't only me. Some people agreed with your point in general, and disagreed on some specifics, or had a slightly different view. In more than one instance you were rude and there was no provocation. You also reduced the arguments to straw men, characterizing them as the lowest common denominators of Obama criticism when they were much more nuanced than that--I'm not just talking about mine.

You certainly don't have to be nice to people who are being jerky toward you, I agree, but that wasn't what was happening here. You called my writing "slimy" and "despicable" and when I pointed out that you were being rude, you told me "Its OK with me, if you don't like the tone of my comment". From rude to passive aggressive. I noticed that you insulted others similarly, without provocation. And certainly, you took people's comments out of context, which is just not fair, considering your stature on this posting space.

Anyone can write off the top of their head in frustration. But I wonder if you know how to apologize--I see nothing like that in the response that you have written. And even if you feel like you don't owe me an apology, I certainly feel like you owe one to others here.
