Now what?
[Read the article: Anonymous Liberal for Glenn Greenwald: FISA reform and the honesty gap]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I've been involved in media analysis for a long time, and I've just gotten to the point where I can only say "yes, they lie, so what?"
Case in point, I was watching Hannity and Colmes last night when the featherheaded terrorism expert Steve Emerson appeared to talk about the Holy Land trial. He lied about 10 times in five astonishing minutes. Alan Colmes refuted his lies with quotes from the day's newspapers, and Emerson countered those lies with insults, for there was nothing he could say to back up his assertions; because he was lying, and obviously so. And yet he'll be on the show in a week or so doing lying again and being caught on the nation's highest rated cable news network.
My question is again "so what?" The right wing lies, their media infrastructure lie, they get caught doing it over and over again. It is only us, the allegedly intellectual crowd, that seems to give a shit.

Simply Amazing
[Read the article: A bizarre, unsolicited e-mail from Gen. Petraeus' spokesman ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Boylan is apparently as dumb as a bag of hammers. It makes you wonder how many of the anonymous posts on this website come from him and his friends in high places.

Sorry, I hope they hang the sucker out to dry like morning laundry
[Read the article: Col. Boylan's implosion accelerates]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Really, these people have been lying and lying, while emptying our treasury, degenerating our nation's morality and killing large amounts of people. If just once, just once, justice could be done to somebody, anybody involved in this Iraq debacle, I would say go after him with as much as the law would allow; if only for proportions sake. I think one of the reasons the COl. felt so comfy writing what would be, in any other field, a potentially career-ender email, is that these people are drunk with power and feel immune.
Also, I had a disturbing set of correspondences with one of the right wing bloggers who wrote Glen a day or two ago. Its just a game to them, they enjoy the lying and the squireeling. This has nothing to do with politics. These are weak and unhappy people. Their goal is to bring others down to their level, to show people who go to the effort of living by a code of morality, that they are indeed no better than the lowest common denominator. And oddly, they write just like the Colonel.

If Only it Were Sexism
[Read the article: Hillary Clinton can take it]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]At least you can fight that. The problem in the debate was that our candidates are full of crap. And everyone of them seemed to want to prove that they were as full of crap as the female front runner. I know there is no factual information in this post, but God it feels good to say.

Hi Joan
[Read the article: When waterboarding was a crime]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This is isn't about waterboarding. Sure, I think its an important issue, but certainly, barring waterboarding is going to have literally no impact on anything going on today. It would be a symbolic victory at best, awash in a sea of symbolic battles--the only kind that we progressives seem able to mount these days. Win or not, the US is still going to be blowing people's brains out in Iraq.
No, my issue is with Chris Matthews. I know you go on his show frequently. I would like to see you take a principled stand the next time you are on and tell Chris that he has to grow up politically. Seriously, he is out of control on the air and the way he talks about gender is simply, and purposefully, a throw-back to 1950's discourse. A few days ago, he not only let Buchanan get away with saying that Obama wasn't acting enough like a "black guy from the south side of Chicago", he joined in! Rather than try to elevate discourse, he seems to think his role is to voice the opinion of what he perceives to be the lowest commond denominator. His ridiculous claims that Clinton is invoking the gender card defy any logic, and any ability of a guest to get a word in edgewise against.
Matthews' understanding of politics seems purposefully superficial--like media criticism on the E Channel. However, he is the most well known "liberal" political tv pundit out there and has a lot of influence. Please, Joan, do something, either privately or publically. Whatever it takes

If only anyone cared either way
[Read the article: Only America-hating traitors believe in due process for journalists]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]While this issue certainly is a constant source of anger to me--the fact that it remains so easy to single out people for prejudicial treatment based on race, religeon and ethnicity--I must admit that we're whistling in the wind.
I defy anyone to find a mainstream media outlet that has actually covered this story; no one cares either way. Which is why its so easy to do it. I feel like all my letters sort of sound this way, but my point is that often people who get wrapped in the political culture lose sight of the fact that no one else--right or left--knows what we're talking about. I am just amazed everytime I talk to my family and their friends just how little they know about anything; they just don't know anything that's not made the round in the opening comedy routines of the late night shows. Just putting that out there for those of us who give a sh@t.

[Read the article: Only America-hating traitors believe in due process for journalists]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I suppose its like talking about how much you hate going to work; its not going to change the fact that you gotta go to work. But I do hope that we (meaning those of us who read the news everyday and have interest in talking about what we see there) will begin a dialogue about how crazy we seem to about 80% of the rest of the country. Really, we spend a lot of time talking about how the right wing media outlets are saying whatever, when only a handful of really angry and committed nutburgers are even reading that stuff. The rest of our paisanos are just out to lunch.
