Cudos to Graz65 who beat me to this punch.
If all God's people actually read and honestly considered the scriptures, misuse of scripture to support false perspectives by grabbing scattered snippets from here and there and ignoring everything else would be difficult if not impossible.
But of course most of those of us who call ourselves Christians (and likely other faiths as well) remain largely ignorant of the scriptures, themselves, and thus are easy prey for leaders who manipulate us by claiming their own perspectives (based on their own psychological dysfunctions) come directly from the Bible, when the truth lies in some completeley other place.
The way such leaders use their "Proof Texts" is often antithetical to what the author(s) they're quoting were attempting to say. If your own favorite guru reacts with great anger and hostility to anyone who questions their perspective and their interpretation of scripture, I guarantee you they are, indeed, misusing it to bolster their mistaken and misguided perspectives. Healthy leaders are able to respond to dissent with reasoned and reasonable arguments and a logical well-reasoned defense of their point of view.
The same is clearly true of Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations" and every other foundational document our con (and some of our lib) friends use and abuse.
Still the temptation will always exist to bolster your own argument by claiming that Adam Smith or the Apostle Paul, or Moses, or Thomas Jefferson, or Benjamin Franklin, or Sigmund Freud, or Karl Jung agrees with what you're saying. Since the general public and the MSM are largely ignorant of the foundational documents of our society, and do not care to do independent research (any more than they cared to do their homework in High School), I fear our society will continue to be damaged and warped by those who falsely claim support from history and scripture for their warped and damaged ideas and ideals.
I can only hope the younger generations and the ease of research on the internet will spur more sensitive B.S. detection and more accurate refutation...
But bear in mind that just because 100 con or lib websites say the same thing (without any actual sourcing) doesn't make it true. Anyone can make things up and present them as absolute "fact" on the net. Both sides have their own echo chambers on the web. Trust nothing unless you can find actual, carefully-designed research to support it.
Anything not supported with verifiable, replicable research is merely opinion as likely to be total b.s. as to be worth something (which sadly includes all the Social Sciences, of which Economics, despite it's massive use of mathematics, is clearly a member).
But he does seem to have a sense of political reality. If you think Obama hasn't been able to get the Democrats in the congress to accomplish anything so far, just let him wipe out DADT and start a major push to wipe out DOMA before 2010.
The result would be that, the RebCons would have major issues to scare the base with and the Democrats would lose the house and lose 60 votes in the Senate (perhaps even 50).
Whatever he would do now with DADT and DOMA would be rolled back and then, while they were at it, the RebCons would probably try to punish GLBT folks in other ways, and the Blue Dog Democrats, being scared for their own seats would go along.
Furthermore, they'd be able to bring anything and everything we'd ever hoped Obama could accomplish to a dead stop.
I promise you, s.o.l., if you were to get what you want RIGHT NOW, you wouldn't have it for long and before long the consequences of your impatience would be outcomes you would NEVER want.
It would require that he demonstrate leadership and take into account the opinions and wisdom of other people. It would also represent a tremendous cut in pay.
As RNC chair, he would be answerable to others.
In his current position, he can spin out B.S. by the honey wagon full, verbally assassinate as many people as he wants (even the Republican leadership), influence policy, pray on air for the US to "fail" and he's essentially untouchable.
But watch. If Michael Steele starts thinking for himself, acting independently and getting "uppity" and stops being a good "boy" he'll be out of a job faster than you can say "Uncle Tom."
