"A liberal media website called Sarah Palin a 'dominatrix.'"
If that is how you feel about her, keep it to yourself. This is a blatantly sexist article that never would have been written about a male politician. I do not like Sarah Palin one bit, but she hardly deserves to be labeled as a sex object in the press. It trivializes her accomplishments in being the young governor of a small state and a working mother. It also underestimates her political skill. She may be corrupt, she is bad on women's issues, and she is more of the same, but please treat her as you would a male politician. You are not writing for a tabloid and your language only helps the Republicans.
Wasn't that funny back in the day, and is painful to watch now. Seriously, he needed a laugh track? Where were his jokes?
Barack Obama has accomplished "nothing", and John McCain has accomplished "a lot"? Gosh, I'm changing my vote now!
John McCain --
Doing "A Lot" for America, when "Just a Little" was not enough.
It's much easier to regulate an industry when it is legal. As much as we may dislike prostitution, bringing it into the light is the only way to ensure the health and well-being of sex workers. Take these ads out of the local print papers and they will just increase on the internet. Shut down brothels/massage parlors and others will take their place.
Ms. Paglia is concerned that Barack has been holding out on us. He did not provide a copy of his birth certificate! He must be a foreign sleeper agent! He did not come clean about his college term papers or full detail on his every encounter with William Ayers! He must be a secret radical!
If Ms. Paglia has another reason why we should care about these fake controversies, I am sure all the Salon.com readers would love to hear it. This is an era of YouTube and Fox News. If Barack Obama harbored a radical agenda it most likely would have been exposed. The failure of the false controversies speaks to Barack Obama's skills as a politician, to the temper of the electorate, and to the lack of substance in the attacks.
The purpose of these attacks (for which Ms. Paglia is now a willing shill) was to paint Barack Obama as the "other." As a dangerous radical. As a scary black man. Thank God that the majority of the electorate no longer harbors the racism required for these baseless attacks to gain traction.
Shame on Salon for continuing to publish this hateful woman.
The show came back because of Amy Poehler's Hillary Clinton and Tina Fey's Sarah Palin. Political satire sells. Fred Armisen's Barack Obama is creepy and uncomfortable, and yet, SNL seems committed to stick with him. They also seem to be committed to Keenan Thompson, their only African American cast member, who is completely worthless.
The show doesn't need to fill itself with impressionists, but at the very least they could try to hire a young black comedian with a passable impression of our new president. Plus, it would be really nice if comedy shows would endeavor to hire persons (men and women) of color.
This article is so ripe for parody. The yuppie is driving around in his SUV, living on an island, in a big house, shopping at Whole Foods, cooking several beef roasts, and he has a problem with his neighbor's outdoor lighting? Sorry if I'm unsympathetic. If he wants to be a real environmentalist, he needs to move to the city, ditch his SUV, and start considering chicken or vegetarianism.
If everyone does the little things, like recycling cans and changing light bulbs for compact fluorescent ones, a significant dent would be made in consumption. We should encourage people who want to go "green," even if they are not fully changing their lifestyles. We should not encourage people to take sanctimonious attitudes about their neighbors.
The article is irking because of the author's attitude about being green. Instead of doing something more to change his own lifestyle, he has decided to change his neighbor's. It's that sort of yuppie attitude that's ripe for satire, and it's the wrong way to make a difference.
Perhaps this all is a brilliant satire, and if so, congratulations to the author, but the larger work is not being billed as such on Amazon.
I loved the line about Harry Reid's accordion legs. The Democrats are finally in power, and they have political capital, and yet they are (especially when it comes to Senate Democrats) still so spineless. It's disgusting.
The facts of life are conservative? You're saying this at the most stunning failure of free-market conventional wisdom in history? What part of reality matches the conservative line? I'm curious.
This article just goes to reinforce the patriarchal stereotypes. Men are all work-oriented and useless without their jobs. Women are family oriented and jobs are optional or a luxury. When exactly are we supposed to get past this garbage? Why can't men care for children? Why can't women be the bread-winners? Why are men so insecure? Why don't women take charge? Why do women even need men?
According to Al Kamen at the Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/08/AR2009030802017_pf.html he's joining a D.C. Lobbying firm that also employs Zell Miller. So let's stop beatificating the guy. He's just another hack and unprincipled scumbag.
