I liked this story. I'm close to the author's age and, though still married, have had a bumpy year. A lot of things she said about relationships really rang true and touched me. I would think that's the goal of any writer. Good for her!
As for Salon, I've been subscribing since it went Premium and reading long, long before that. They have changed over the years, but they still deliver. I enjoy their political coverage, Audiofile, Broadsheet and the little surprises they send my way, like this story. I'll continue to subscribe.
Worthington admitted that she thought "sexuality is a gift from god," and that she believes in "abstinence until marriage"
Brava for her! That's the way she should live her life! But to expect the rest of us to follow along with her personal belief is ridiculous.
Macy's character is from Wisconsin. I haven't seen the movie yet, but the crowd was on Charlie Rose recently and they had a scene where the cigarette guy accuses Wisconsin cheese of being artery-cloggin and Macy gets all shook up and says, "Wisconsin will not apologize for its cheese!"
I don't care if it was just college writing or movie reviews or whatever. Look at it! This is extensive stealing of other people's words. The guy has NO credibility as a writer. Way to go, WaPo.
Isn't he the S&L Bush? And now he's making sure our children is learning? That's just super!
Why is breastfeeding in public gross? What is gross about feeding your child? Is bottlefeeding gross then? What the hell are your hangups?
I heard the author do an essay on NPR recently and while the global themes of family feuds and estrangement were compelling, the backdrop of Sweet 'N Low was a little surreal. I'm glad to hear you say this works better in the book. I'll look for it!
Wow, Salon isn't going to find anyone to write for them if this keeps up!
Nina, I just want to say I totally get where you were coming from, trying to raise a blue kid in a red area. I'm doing the same and I understand how one can be sensitive about religion and patriotism, especially considering the current forms they take as they're shoved down our throats by the national leaders. I liked your essay. Good luck.
Is the "Greenest Kennedy?" What other kind of green stuff are the folks at Grist smoking? Have they seen him promoting his Hummer?
"It would have helped if his material were a little cleverer and delivered with a better sense of timing."
Then write it, boyo! Obviously, it's a matter of taste, but I've watched it about five times and I think he's perfect and spot-on. Brilliant even, especially considering the context; he was not performing to a receptive audience. Bravo!
because a former Secretary of State should not be judged on her appearance, but doesn't she look especially good in this interview? I just have to wonder if she spruced herself up because she crushes on Jon Stewart like the rest of us. (Or maybe it's because she's not 'eating for her country.')
But how cool is she? "I felt that...basically I'm critical of the president publicly and so if I was face to face with him, I should tell him what I think." Albright rocks!
now we know what's right!
I worked for a company that imported cheap plastic toys from Japan and other eastern regions. We once got a case of wind-up Halloween pumpkins that would walk across the table. The big blurb on the box said, "Fancy and lovely action!" but really they were neither fancy nor lovely. These cats, on the other hand....
Just realize that there may be consequences if you do. The tank man in Tiananmen Square followed his conscience. We don't know what happened to him. This asshole followed his conscience. I think he got off easy.
