  • Right and Wrong vs. Guilty and Innocent

[Read the article: Duke women not innocent]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"What I think is that the team players and their friends did not think it was wrong for those boys to rape a black stripper."

Is within the rights of a black stripper to falsely accuse team members of rape? Every time news of this case rears its ugly head, more evidence undermining the accusers credibility has been added to what had already been an enormous heap.

Perhaps we will discover a mountain of counter-evidence that establishes their guilt, but a presumption of guilt is certainly worse than a presumption of innocence -- especially considering that a presumption of innocence at this point is legally justified.

  • GOP Doesn't Hate Women, They Hate Loser

[Read the article: Fleeing the battle]

For months the GOP in Florida has been saying that Katherine Harris can't win against Bill Nelson, a senator who has given new dimensions to the word "bland."

This assumes that Harris is a candidate that anyone would back. She gives a new definition to the phrase "freakish loser." Check out her bizarre and obvious attempt to highlight her breast augmentation on Hannity & Colmes:

Katherine Harris is an embarrassment to the GOP and American women. No wonder there is a site called "Republican Babes," if "lookit my boobs!" is an appropriate behavior for a Republican candidate. The GOP's careful backing away from Harris is to its credit.

Meanwhile, over on Free Republic, the Freepers are calling for grass roots support of Irey. This group donates $66K a quarter for the operating expenses of Free Republic, so maybe they can squeeze out a few more $K for Irey.

  • Who are "they"

[Read the article: Israel's failed-state strategy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Many of these letters casually use the term "they" as if the Palestinian's unanimously kidnapped an Israeli soldier, and the Israelis all responded in lock-step. The politics of hate, as usual, are the purview of a minority, and being waged at the expense of everyone.

Many of these letters seem to conveniently conflate all Israelis and Palestinians into unified fronts. There are two inconvenient truths about any peace process. First, there will be some people who will try to ruin it for everyone, and if any of those people happen to be in a position of power, like the Israeli government, they will succeed in doing so. Second, is that when you make peace, there will necessarily be reconcilliation between people who have committed injustices against one another.

"Hamas is a terrorist organization." Yes, and it is attempting to become a political party. I thought that's what "democratization" was all about. I thought that was what we all wanted. It worked for Sein Fein. Respected Isreali Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir began his political career as a terrorist in the notorious "Stern Gang" (the Lehi). Would it have been appropriate for the British -- many of whom died in bombings sponsored by the Lehi -- to destabilize the Shamir regime because the Israelis had the audacity to elect a terrorist?

  • To MPT

[Read more letters about this article: Here]

MPT: "Just imagine the response of the USA if Palestinian terrorists killed a bunch of American teenagers."

I'm guessing that we'd invade Iran, maybe Syria -- at least if this happened before 2008.

  • North is Not South

[Read the article: Israel's maximal option]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

English Teacher (thankfully, not History Teacher), writes:

"Hey Joebuck, can you explain then how Israel can do the justified thing, and take out Hizbollah in Southern Lebanon...without damaging civilian infrastructure. Since as you point out so correctly, Hizbollah IS basically the whole civilian infrastructure of Southern Lebanon?"

The primary complaint about the destruction of civilian infrastructure is that it is occuring in areas not controlled by Hizbullah. Whatever is necessary to halt Hibullah's aggression in the south is unlikely to include "bombing and airport in the north."

Deliberately hitting non-military targets has long been considered a war crime.
