In 10 years time Walsh will still be writing these columns, or perhaps dictating them wrapped in a straight jacket from the inside of a padded cell.
But I found her response to one of the comments more telling as I often do, e.g. when she informed us that she only seemed biased because the entirety of the media was biased toward Obama. That of course is another way of saying that the objective ground is determined by the location of her feet, which additionally accounts for the dismissive tone she takes with commenters. But this one was perhaps as priceless- Joan Walsh: "Republicans don't do this to their former Presidents".
Great point, given the legion of ex-Republican Presidents that have reemersed themselves in Presidential Primary politics. And how many Republicans do what you and Paul Krugman and Bill and Hillary Clinton are currently doing to their nominee??? Rush Limbaugh was on a war path against McCain, promised to support Hillary over him, said he was that bad... during the primary. Now the primary is over, you'd never know all that by the way he and they all have quickly fallen into line. But not Joan's terribly hurt feelings, ohhhh noooo. These grievances will out! If Obama's people and supporters aren't sexist than they're race card players. What a bunch of horse manure.
Joan and the rest of her dead ender cultists have really convinced themselves of their own self-righteousness. No wonder the walls are closing in.
I cannot get over the level of apoplexy and derision currently being directed at John Edwards over sexual inpropriety that we should be so lucky was the worst sin of the roughly 50% of politicians that have comitted it (by conservative estimates). All the stone throwers with mass graves of bones in their own closets are lined up at the ready, hoping beyond hope to get the nut shot on that despicable Edwards guy (I just have to spit when I say that now). It's just freaking great! YES!
Actually, the part that I have to learn to love and stop worrying about because it will feel SOOO good- as in T.S. Garp style GOOOOOOOOOOOD- is not the fact that people are outraged or overly puritanical, it's that it shines a light on how warped, salacious and hypocritical we all are. YES! We are so not morally apt! Awesome!
None of which touches on the fact that if we directed a small fraction of this vituperative energy at a culture, media and political system that shrugs off, I don't know, say, a White House that has decided not to prosecute clear as day violations of the law in the Justice Department's hiring practices amongst other outrageous abuses of power, we might even have a nation in sufficiently good shape that we could afford to give two shits about an ex-candidate who, in an unheard of move, cheated on his wife before in an even more unheard of move, lied about it whilest running for office.
Sure, we get upset about the stuff that actually is slowly corroding our republic with untold future ramifications- at least this crowd- but then there's a reality show to see, an iPhone to buy, the new gossip to discuss, we've got to go for coffee, drinks on Tuesday and then of course plan the trip to Cabo. Hey, at least we're inconsistent in the most politically useful way for moneyed interests!! BINGE. PURGE. Suck on this.
Of course- how did I miss that? Perhaps it was the blindingly outrageous hypocrisy of the myriad lemmings traipsing over Edward's grave, here and elsewhere? Or maybe it could've been my recognition of the duality of man. Actually, scratch that, anti-moral relativist crusaders and their worm-hole-opening powers of cognizant dissonance have shown me the light.
Come to think of it, you know what it probably really is? Here's the thing: I'm the only one that knows a whole lot of people that have a whole lot of bad episodes in their lives where they've done things they wouldn't want to be judged on. To the 99.99% of decent God fearing Americans out there who lie themselves to sleep every night this behavior is unheard of.
To be clear, I couldn't care less about Edwards. I couldn't like him for his too blatant reinvention of himself between 04 and 08. But a stupid scandal about ex-candidate when the economy is deteriorating (albeit in ways the 'elite' experts will only start telling you about in a few months) and the Bush administration continues to subvert the very core of what each of our (unless Native or African American) ancestors reached for and built into a better place for their progeny?? Really, is that worthy target for our effed up, inane, hapless, ineffectual moaning?
This is our legacy. This is how we will collectively be held up as a case study on the inveterate weakness of the human soul, for generations of humans to come. What made them just sit there, like gizmo grasping peacocks while Rome burned? Well typing on iPhones getting one's rocks off deriding some ex-pol for a dangerous liaison takes time. And hey- oh my goodness- that same pol lavished a smidgen of his war chest on the fling ($100K in marginally misappropriated campaign donations vs. untold billions of tax payer dollars siphoned off by the Bush administration and aimed at propping up a permanent patronage doling, plutocratic, ruling class). The horror! The hypocrisy! The hubris! The fucking horrid horse shit pop culture outrage.
