I love it.

It's funny -- whenever I criticize Clinton, people think I'm supporting Obama. Whenever I criticize Obama, people think I'm supporting Clinton. This is apparently how simple-minded a lot of people have become.

Giving Obama a pass on this does not mean any of us are part of a Clinton "cult", OK?

I have never seen as many whiny, intolerant, and yes, moronic people as I have on Salon's letters pages this primary season. God help us in November.

Non-Issue

I repeat, non-issue.

Y'all come on down south. We'll use some endearments that'll curl your hair! Bless your pointy little heads.

Do letter-writers read the other letters?

Or do they just run in here and let it rip?

Didn't any women in here ever dress up and clomp around in Mommy's heels? That's what these little girls are doing. And they're actually getting paid to do it.

As FranZooey says, go to the Dereon website. There are no shoes for sale for little girls, and the clothes are no worse (or better, for that matter) than anything I've seen for sale anywhere else.

Any gamblers out there?

I'm almost willing to make a wager that Beyonce is NOT selling 4-inch heels in toddler/little girl sizes. Anyone that can find proof of that is welcome to post it here.

Look at the Larger Ad

If you look at the larger picture of the ad in the Plastic Pundit link, the shoes on the girl in the picture on the right really do appear to be adult-size shoes. At least that's what it looks like to me. So, at least maybe they're not selling high heels to toddlers!

The study seemed to address only one issue, really.

The issue being whether or not it's true that immigrants today (legal or illegal) don't assimilate as quickly as immigrants in the past. And it seems to indicate that today's immigrants (legal and illegal) do assimilate more quickly.

There are many people who use the argument that, since immigrants (and that includes LEGAL immigrants ) don't assimilate, we should close our borders. This study seems to refute that, and I don't think it is saying that illegal immigration is a good thing. It is merely stating that, if you're here illegally, there are lots of things you can't do to assimilate, and that accounts for some of the disparities in assimilation levels.

Confirms what I have long suspected.

Living in Cleveland, even well into the 1980's, there were still all kinds of foreign-language newspapers (mostly eastern European), ethnic radio shows every weekend, and things like Slovenian debutante balls. I also knew many people whose grandparents never learned to speak fluent English.

I think most immigrants today don't have the "luxury" of living in homogeneous communities, so that they do, in fact, assimilate faster.

Only to fast-forward to the puppet sex scene, I guess.

Original article: Racism on the trail

I think Ed Morrissey is, quite possibly, mistaken.

It is really difficult to tell from the Washington Post article, with only a couple of exceptions, whether those responsible for expressing racist sentiments are Democrats or Republicans. Things like black students being called the "n word" along a highway, or poll workers hearing these things (unless Democrats and Republicans vote at different polling places in Pennsylvania and Indiana), or Obama's campaign headquarters being vandalized -- there is no way you can truthfully state that these events happened "in the context of a Democratic primary".

Off-Topic

So, what's this I hear about John Hagee apologizing to Catholics, and Bill Donohue saying that "it's over". (I presume he's talking about the dispute with Hagee.) Does this mean that Glenn and Bill Donohue are no longer BFF, and that McCain's "pastor problem" is behind him?

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 09:33 AM

But I think we know the answer now.

Yes, we most certainly do.

Thank you, Glenn, and the rest of you, who have the time, the smarts, and the patience to wade through all of this information. Cubicle dwellers like me really appreciate it! I barely have time to read all of your posts (but I do, as much as I possibly can), much less to comment, but if I am at all typical, then you are reaching many more people than those who do comment here.

Don't stop doing what you're doing!

Need more information

I'm wondering if the increase in over-40 pregnancies is for women who have already had successful pregnancies in the past, or for "first-timers". Maybe they didn't break it down that far.

My understanding is that, if you've been fertile in the past (carried one or more pregnancies to term), then you'd better use protection even into your forties. If you haven't ever been pregnant, or haven't carried a pregnancy to term, your chances of getting pregnant in your forties are pretty slim.

...who does the average middle-aged American man look like?

Just curious.

I'm wondering...

Lynx

I do realize that, in medical terminology, a miscarriage can be called a spontaneous abortion.

But, in everyday language, which is what people who are not medical professional use, a miscarriage is something that happens unintentionally, without outside interference, and is usually an unexpected and unwelcome event. (I realize that many miscarriages happen before a woman even knows she's pregnant, and also that a miscarriage may not be unwelcome if a woman doesn't want to be pregnant, and might be considering obtaining an abortion.)

To people who have had miscarriages, and have grieved over them, this feels like a pretty insensitive use of the term, even though it may be medically accurate.

I am pro-choice, by the way. And I feel that Shvarts is not really a friend of the pro-choice movement.

Can we stop saying...
