In my state of Florida (and I believe some others as well) a women can change her mind about being a parent even after the birth by taking the newborn baby to a fire station, police station or hospital within five days. She can then give the baby up, no questions asked, not even her name, and have no further responsibility for the child. So let's see - She chooses whether to have sex, if she gets pregnant she chooses whether to have the child or an abortion, and then even gets to decide whether to keep the child even after it's born. The man on the other hand, is told (by some)to quit whining, that he gave up all right to choose whether to be a parent just by having sex. And the state will then use all of its powers to force the man to financially support whatever her choices are.
Seems fair to me, right? I can't imagine why all these rotten men don't stay around to be the good fathers they chose to be by having sex, right? And, of course, the women are such victims in all of this.
Just like the NY Times story about McCain and some lobbyist having an affair a while ago was true, right?
I've seen numerous stories in Time, Yahoo, etc. saying that Palin's daughter's pregnancy was well known, and discussed pretty openly locally in Alaska. So the NY Times assertion that McCain somehow didn't know about it, didn't vett Palin properly, and that this shows how incompetent he is really, really stretches the credibility of the NYT for a lot of folks, including me.
The liberal establishment and MSM doesn't seem to understand that this issue is NOT a big deal with most of middle class America, even with "family values" types. It's happening everywhere, and just isn't a big deal anymore. So most likely McCain wasn't pleased, but he wasn't particularly concerned about it hurting them much. I'm sure every potential VP candidate had some problems; this and a few others were hers.
And I'll stress to anyone who cares that liberals trying to tear down Palin the way they are is really, really hurting their cause with many independent voters. In fact, I can't believe the way Salon, and so many liberal bloggers, are covering the Palin pick. I find it sickening.
I (and so many others) liked Obama because he promised change. Not politics as usual, and not sexist, personal attacks and character assasination by innuendo. Keep it up, and you are going to cost him the swing voters he needs to win the election.
I couldn't imagine a Democrat (such as Bill Clinton) letting his spouse hang aroung the office, having her involved in "state business" and exerting "unusual influence on her husband's (state and then federal) government." How shocking of Palin; what a tremendous scandal Mike Madden and Salon have uncovered here!
Personally, I don't have an opinion on whether spouses should be part of an elected official's administration, formally or not. It would seem to me to be a choice for the official to make, like any other staff appointment. And the voters can judge it all at a later election date.
But how can this article be written with a straight face by a Democratic writer/supporter, given Bill and Hillary's "co-presidency"? There's surely a lot for the Dems to try to go after Palin with (like her stands on some issues), but this stuff looks too desperate.
What would have been a non-partial ethics violation investigation in faraway Alaska has now become a big time political football due to Palin's presence on the Republican ticket. So Palin (and McCain) don't believe the investigation will be fair any longer, and have backed off cooperating with it.
It was a commmittee led by a Democrat that issued the subpoenas, someone if he was originally non-partisan now appears simply to want to embarrass Palin as much as possible to hurt the Republicans nationally. Read some of his quotes about "criminal charges" and an "October surprise" if you don't believe me. Subpoenas issued by legislative committees are and have been used for political purposes across both sides of the aisle forever.
But the Democrats have overplayed their hand at this, and the Alaska legislature will likely just put the problem to bed by postponing the investigation until after the election, or killing it completely. The Obama people will then of course say how all of this shows the fix is in, how she's guilty, has no respect for the rule of law, etc., etc.
Just politics as usual from both sides. No "Change" of any kind from either party. Too bad.
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
