  • Best of the Libby letters... (Not sarcastic!)

[Read the article: Joe Klein's stirring defense of Lewis Libby]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

From Mr John E Rogers, a former assistant US attorney:

(It's deep in the smokinggun document dump)

"For a high government officer to do what was done in this case, to lie and lie and lie and continuously dissemble in order to a block a criminal investigation of a national security breech is an extremely serious matter, very akin to treason."

    [...]

"I urge you to impose a sentence in this case appropriate to the crimes committed by this defendant, taking into consideration his betrayal of his high position and his country, his superior knowledge as a lawyer and former partner in a major law firm as to exactly what he was doing and his continuing unrepentant conduct. Whether he is kind to his dog, a nice guy, a good neighbor, or anything else is, of course, irrelevant to what he did and continues to do."

    [emphasis mine]

  • Secrecy

[Read the article: Tucker, Jonah, Elizabeth and Jillian]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

These people are idiots. Mao and Stalin thought they were working to "good ends". So did Hitler and Mussolini and Kim Jong Il and every godawful dictator who's taken their infamous place in history.

And the reason for the secrecy is twofold. It is not just to protect the dirty, sometimes morally repugnant, means by which these good ends are reached, it is in fact primarily to protect the Great Leaders from having their definition of "good ends" scrutinized and challenged.

Goldberg, who apparently is writing a book about totalitarianism, better find some space in it for a discussion of secrecy. Because it is the lifeblood of closed, dictatorial states.

  • A rare occasion to agree with the right-wing base...

[Read the article: The GOP is the party of the Iraq war]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Who have railed at the media for explaining McCain's implosion through his support for the war.

As you point out, the counterintuitive argument (that all leading GOP candidates are pro-war) is compelling. Personally, I think immigration sealed the deal, but McCain has never been a friend of the base - McCain even voted against Bush's tax cuts, which as we all know is like pissing on a nativity scene.

(From the link attached below, McCain: "I voted against the tax cuts because of the disproportional amount that went to the wealthiest Americans. I would clearly support not extending those tax cuts in order to help address the deficit."

    As I said, total sacrilege.

  • What an ass...

[Read the article: The Weekly Standard's "9/11 Generation"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I would have highlighted this excerpt as well:

"In the 1970s, '80s, and '90s, military service didn't occur to most young people as an option, let alone a duty."

Truly, the trustfund baby clique have never considered it a duty. Before during and after Vietnam, these people dodged service, had other people fight their existential battles, and cheered heroically from the sidelines.

So yeah, maybe there is a smidgen of unvarnished truth here. The fact is many young people do consider serving. Even with what happened in Vietnam and now Iraq. But nothing will persuade the College Republicans for serving. No sirree, they live by the policy of "No Trustfund Baby in the front line."

  • What about this excerpt?

[Read the article: Further politicization of the U.S. military's public statements]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"As to your other issues with [Hewitt's] interview, I fail to see what questions you took issue with from the radio program [...]

The questions that were asked were many of the same questions that [Petraeus] receives from just about every news outlet of late [...]"

I take that as not only as further evidence that the Liberal Media argument is complete bunk, but I also hope our media sees it on record that they interview as effectively as Hugh Hewitt. They must be so proud.

  • What should have been the lead story yesterday...

[Read the article: A new low of mindlessness for our media]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Robert Novak's column:

    http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=21734

I'm no fan of Novak, but this article about assisting the Turks fight the Kurdish minority in return for a promise not to invade Iraq, if true, at least counts as NEWS.

  • title...

[Read the article: National Review's new tough guy, Mark Hemingway]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    The Hidden Gender:

How the Republican Party Neuters Political Opponents, and why the Media is part of the Operation.

    OR

    National Insecurity:

How the Right fakes Courage and Sacrifice, and why their Narcissistic Idolatry embarrasses and endangers America.

    OR

    The Rambo-Complex:

How the Cowards and Blowhards on the Right have come to think Fantasy Heroism is a basis for Foreign Policy.

It's not like you can make this into a title... maybe someone smarter than I can... but I see it this way. The Ledeens of this world are proud to think with theirs d!cks. It should therefore be no surprise to see that their ideas are crude, ugly and humiliating. It merely reflects the organ that inspired them.

And finally, I hope your book makes some mention of Jim Webb, who is the embodiment of everything the Righties wish they were. I for one hope that Webb comes to increasing prominence in the Democratic Party, not least because he will expose the faux masculinity for precisely what it is.
