  • double standard, even in criticism

    Tim and Alex,

I respectfully disagree. While Obama and Edwards may take criticism, the incidents that you cite are infrequent and happening over a one year period. I can name at least 100 slams on Clinton in the press in the past month. Furthermore, Bill Clinton is right about Obama's voting record and it doesn't matter what kind of spin he throws after it on Tim Russert's show (one of the most sexist journalists in recent memory---remember his intervew with Nancy Pelosi two years ago in the run up to the last congressional election?) And, to top it all off, Obama has not been voting much at all and that's the real scandal here. Clinton is flying back to make every important vote, has her name in every race, and do you know why? Because every time a woman tries to do anything she is slammed for her attendance record, whereas men routinely get off easy as the public assumes "they have better things to do."

What's wrong with being "third world in presentation?" Or is it just that CM said it?

What's embarassing is the assumption that Steinem hasn't read de Beauvoir. No one, especially Gloria, would deny Jim Crow, just as no one would deny that there are more animal shelters than women's shelters in this country. The point is: shouldn't all women be concerned that Obama is so heavily supported by so many elite, white men on both sides of the aisle (Rove, Kerry, etc.)?

With that kind of support, we won't need to worry about anything changing for women in the U.S. (whether in the boardroom, or at the doctor's office) any time soon.

Whether you like Hillary or not isn't the issue, she will be expected to make change for women AND minorities in a way none of the other candidates will.

BTW, the battles of the 60s aren't over: Obama keeps reminding us of MLK, Jr. and the neocons keep the story in play. If Steinem had to pitch her article that way, it was because most of the American public HASN'T taken a Women's Studies course.

This is an interesting "identity" piece considering that the media has for the last four weeks said that this primary should *Not* be about "identity*

Good luck with Obama, he has no clue and is from Illinois, one of the most corrupt states on this planet. Do people really think that a junior senator from Illinois (with no family connections) can make it in Washington? Goood Luuuuuuckk!

I'm sorry , I don't know how to spell her name, but her daughter apparently told her how to endorse so "we're even." Jesus, you can't even find a politician with their own opinion anymore because "baby craziness" has overtaken the country. The little babies are voting tomorrow, (who have no f**** clue how the world works) and we all have to stand by it after the big, f*** baby leaves the White House. Good luck to us all.

  • Where the hell is Glenn Greenwald?

His articles make sense, the rest are fluff. And you know he's been leading up to his big expose where he exposes the fact that the republicans (mostly Bush) have the democrats in congress by their big, hairy ba**s. Yes, the reason the democrats haven't done anything in congress yet, is because of what HILLARY ClINTON revealed in the second to the last debate: Bush is going to sign away Iraq in perpetuity, and there's nothing the democrats in congress can do about it, so even if Obama says this is an unjust war, it doesn't matter because he's not on the senate foreign relations committee (see junior senator comments above) and he's not in the washington know-how, so say hello to McCain, you freaks! 100 years of war! yeah! Oh, and spying. I love you Glenn.

but McCain's approach to this reporter is right on (and I'm not ever going to vote for him). I wish more politicians would react to the press this way, and the way Bill Clinton has. I would make an exception for Hillary Clinton since she cannot act that way or she will be slaughtered by the press. They need to learn a lesson about repeating things the voters have already dealt with and if the public doesn't know then they're not paying attention and it's their own fault. It's not the reporter's job to "remind" people about what they should already know, that's what advertisers do, and if you ask me the job of adverstisers and reporters has become difficult to tell apart.

[Read the article: How the long primary battle helps Democrats]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I see the primary season transforming the very nature of presidential elections. I have been thinking this for quite some time; it doesn't seem to have hurt the democrats one bit, and both candidates have been able to take much needed breaks from the campaign. The only way McCain can pull this off in the general is if he comes up with a Hail Mary on Iraq, exactly what he's trying and failing to do on his whirlwind tour.

By the way, it keeps Nader out of the fray too.
