From now on, all reporting should be done Joan's way. She should supervise it and approve it before we even see it. I mean, she's such a luminary. And who are these minor players she talking about anyway? Chuck Todd? Wolf Blitzer? Maureen Dowd? Joan towers over them with her thoughtful, meticulous reporting. Doncha think?
Oh, wait a minute...
Chuck Todd, Wolf Blitzer and Maureen Dowd don't even know Joan Walsh's name, do they? Oh well. Maybe that's because Joan makes statements like, "Why does bipartisanship always mean Democrats caving in to Republicans?" I guess the operative word here is "caving" -- when Obama would probably use the word "compromising" instead. But Joan doen't get that. She doesn't get that when Obama said he was going to reach across the aisle, he actually meant it. And even sadder, she doesn't get that the press is actually going to start doing its job at one point. Which means asking Obama tough questions. Questions Joan might not like.
Oh, and Media Matters -- an organization that Hillary Clinton helped set up -- actually debunked the Hillary Clinton "power grab" story? Golly, what a surprise.
Go turn up the volume on the TV, Joan -- and enjoy your Pete Seeger. You're stuck in the sixties just like he is. Don't you know it's a brand new day?
PS: Is it just me or does Obama's Press Secretary Robert Gibbs look like the PC guy in the Apple commercials?
1) Banning torture. Obama has limited interrogation techniques to those outlined in the Military Field Manual. But in this same directive, he also created a committee to study whether the Field Manual techniques are too limiting -- "when employed by departments or agencies outside the military." Like the CIA and FBI. The fact is, Obama has tasked Robert Gates and Director of National Intelligence-designate Dennis Blair with this study and they're going to report back to him with "additional or different guidance for other departments or agencies." Great.
3) Ethics Reform. In his new Ethics Directive, Obama announced that he would hold his administration to a higher ethical standard, which specifically bans lobbyists from serving in his administration. But just one day later, Obama chose William Lynn, the top lobbyist for Raytheon Co., for the position of Deputy Secretary of Defense. Great.
3) Closing Guantánamo. But Obama has no idea what he’s going to do with the prisoners. Communities through out the country are already rising up and saying – Not in my backyard. Not to mention the fact that dozens of prisoners already released from Guantánamo are once again active Al Qaeda terrorists. The New York Times did a major story on this a just few days ago. And if the 240 detainess that remain are tried in Federal Courts, many of these terrorists will go scott free based on the way evidence was collected. PLUS, if you read the fine print in Obama’s directive, you’ll see that he has left open the option of returning to the Military Tribunals initiated under the Bush administration. Great.
So what's really going on here? Sounds more like “purposeful ambiguity” to me. So stop your fawning, Joan -- it's time to read the fine print and do some REAL reporting.
You mean the same crew that dogged the Bush administration for eight years? Get used to it. What goes around, comes around.
Mark my words, Obama will have far more problems from his base than he will ever have from Republicans. In fact, I'll bet my bottom dollar that the left -- who made the mistake of thinking Obama's "reach-across-the-aisle" campaign rhetoric was just that -- will be savaging him before the year is out for behaving exactly as he said he would. The press, however, gets to start right now. And so, as I said before, get used to it. George Bush certainly did.
