I sympathize with the feelings of most of the writers above. I'm ticked that the Dems are caving but considering the narrow majorities and various factions, "blue dog", etc. don't believe they have the votes to do otherwise. I do wonder why they haven't told Bush that there will be a quid pro quo, no timelines in Iraq then kiss your precious trade deals goodbye same thing for the immigration deal. No Bush iniative will be approved. No modification of FISA...none, nada, nie...
I'm not saying what happened to the US Attorneys was fair or legal, it wasn't, but they did choose to work for Bush and Gonzo. Just what did they expect?
Gee, it was in Belgium the last time I visited a couple of years ago. When did it move? Corsi is ill-informed but dangerous.
There is a common saying in Mexico attributed to the Dictator Porfirio Diaz; "Poor Mexico, so close to the United States and so far from God." Most Mexicans admire much about the US but remain leery of us for good reason.
The YouTubers did very well, of course, compared to Chris Mathews the bar wasn't set very high.
For the last word on the subject of foreskins see the first book of Kings, Chapter 18 at verses 25-27, in which David collects 200 foreskins of Philistines as a dowry for Saul's hot daughter Michol.
Now if they had been Republicans rather than Philistines, Oh! same thing.
Heating Oil Bill.
Congress has better things to be doing than inquiring into the honesty of professional sports. It is entertainment folks and no different than a carnival side show. When asked if the Bearded Lady was real, P. T. Barnum replied, "That's just the question: persons who pay their money at the door have a right to form their own opinions after they have got up stairs". People who spend their money and time watching the NFL or the World Series are entitled to form their own opinions, but please, let's not waste our tax dollars on these inquiries.
ivanski has it right with The "gross emitter" factor. This is exactly the nub of the problem. It is difficult to get those cars off the road because they are cheap to operate. If you have a dependable old car that is long since paid for and is a daily runner with normal maintenance, then no matter how bad the mileage or how high the price of gasoline it is almost always cheaper to keep driving it than replacing it with something new. For many people the monthly cost is by far the most important element in the equation and hence those "gross emitters" stay on the road.
The widespread perception that American Jews place Israel ahead of the US or an equal level of importance is fed in part because most mainstream American Jews participate in the political process through organizations and publications that have a liberal, progressive or pluralistic identity rather than a specific religious or ethnic identity while hard line right wing Jews participate in the political process via specifically Jewish or pro-Israel identified organizations such as AIPAC or the ADL. People who are not Jewish, the less sophisticated ones at any rate, often assume that Foxman speaks for all American Jews. While the percentage of American Jews who vote Democratic in national elections has declined some in the last few election cycles, a large majority of American Jews vote Democratic and contribute money in very significant amounts to Democrats and liberal organizations.
In most other parts of the world, television anchors and reporters are known as "readers."
American Airlines has banned tips for skycaps but now wants $15 for the first bag. They are backing off in Boston on the tips after losing a law suit but the rule shows pretty clearly where managements' heads are. I have logged millions of miles flying since my first commercial flight in 1944. Retired, I have time so no longer fly except when traveling out of the country. I would rather pay at the gas pump than ride in one of their cattle cars.
With it now settled that Obama will be the Democratic Nominee one would think that some of the vitriol would dissipate, one would be wrong. As I read this thread most of the comments make me worry for our party.
Buuuuutttt, I thought driving a fuel efficient vehicle was a sign of sexual inadequacy.
Thank you Joan. The content of this comment thread proves your argument. As a well educated white male and life long Democrat I'm embarrassed for our party.
That would take triangulation to new heights.
Even if the Democrats win in a landslide, picking up many House & Senate seats, I don't hold out much hope for improvement in the next Congress. Newly elected Democrats this Fall will more than likely be very centrist or Blue Dog types from purple or red districts. They will not vote to revamp FISA, end the Bush War or take any other steps to restore the Constitution. The republicans have broken our nation and it will not be easily repaired.
Even if the Democrats win big in November, most of the new Democrats in the House and Senate will come from purple or red districts and they will be centrists or blue dogs. These newly electeds will not support an end to Bush's war, diplomacy over aggression or restoration of our Constitutional rights. Do not expect a Democratic sweep to produce a more liberal Congress. There is much work yet to be done to put our country back together again.
