See all the stuff Wandering Aengus just said about you? If you do anything that makes people consider you morally responsible for that child, expect to hear a lot more like that. Anything you do for yourself will be considered selfish. Any behavior problems the kid has will be blamed on you (even if they existed before you moved in). Anything that goes well with the kid will be credited to his noble single father. If you move out, you'll be considered to have abandoned the child. If your boyfriend dumps you, you'll be expected to go away without a fuss because he and his new girlfriend are trying to bond with the child (even if by that time you've already bonded with the child and would like to see him again).
I'm glad they were able to get married before she passed away. Condolences to Phyllis Lyon and to Kendra, the daughter they raised together.
Does anyone know where we can find the final delegate vote totals?
Clinton, who spent years being fire-forged for her place in history.
After hearing this "thirty years of experiences" type of nonsense repeated so often, it's refreshing to get a chance to apply it to someone new:
Sarah Palin's many years of experience with BP Energy will surely be invaluable to her. Let's not forget the four victories she can claim in the "Iron Dog" race. She also has twenty years of experience at being one-eighth Yup'ik.
Wheeee, I've gotta go hunt down more info about her husband, this is fun!
I felt very sorry for him tonight. I hope he gets a nice bounce from this convention, and dies peacefully in his sleep this week believing he's going to be president. Then Palin can take the embarrassing loss rather than it hurting McCain. Poor old guy.
This is the supervisor's fault, s/he's failed to train them for the job. Your organization's lack of constructive feedback isn't helping matters.
The federal courthouse in Boston employs mentally-handicapped janitors and they do a wonderful job without disrupting anyone. Your office can be that way too, if everyone gets over their awkwardness and stops treating the developmentally-challenged workers like charity cases. Your director should ask for a meeting with their supervisor and the director of the community center to set some ground rules and demand additional training for the cleaners.
Eliwatkins, thank you for reminding us of that passage from The Grapes of Wrath. The government action in destroying crops and livestock to prop up the price of food seems like the country cousin of the government taking 700 billion of our tax dollars to prop up stocks. Both actions are based on the mistaken idea that it is business which creates jobs, when it should be obvious that there can be no business if your customers are dead or dead broke.
You used the word "house" rather than "home" in one sentence. That's the first robin of spring. It's the first sign I've seen that we may be nearing bottom. I'll know we really are there when newspapers start using "house" instead of "home".
while Clinton certainly is more accomplished than the Thrilla from Wasilla
Palin worked her way up from City Council to Governor. Hillary rode her husband's coattails into a Senate seat (that should have gone to Nita Lowey). I may disagree with Palin's views on almost everything, but I respect her political accomplishments.
PHM1949, what's your reasoning behind saying that Clinton would have been a failed politician without Hillary? You say that she 1) raised their kid - a nanny could have done that
2) supported and promoted her husband - as did his other supporters.
Clinton would have been president with any wife. A wife other than Hillary might have left things like universal health care to those who were actually elected rather than turning it into a cloak-and-dagger ego boost for herself. We might have had universal health care in this country in the '90's if not for her.
Do you really think another retired attorney from Arkansas could have moved to New York and muscled her way onto the Democratic nomination for senator a few months later?
No, feminism is about equality. Equal opportunities for men and women. Palin has climbed the political ladder the same way men do. Sure, she's used her charm and appearance to some extent, but so did George Bush, Bill Clinton, JFK, and Ronald Reagan.
So, peeps1, you'd be in favor of banning marriage for any woman over 50? Perhaps you'd add a fertility test to the requirements to get a marriage license? Or are you going to be really traditional and go back to the Dark Ages tradition that a first-time bride waddle down the aisle pregnant to prove she's marriage-worthy?
Marriage is a religious institution that somehow was taken over by the state. The correct thing is that federal law should recognize only civil unions; and marriage be left to the different religions and denominations thereof.
No, marriage is a civil contract that religion decide to get involved with.
Your plan does have the merit of allowing gays to marry, as there are quite a few religious denominations that already perform gay marriage. However, it would completely bar atheists from marrying. You'd be trading sexual-orientation discrimination for religious discrimination.
I'm sick of the Clintons. I don't want them to infect this wonderful hopeful new administration. Richardson should be secretary of state.
