Please don't say you really want to direct

Like so many people, the LW has no actual goal, he just wants to be in film. Does he want to direct, produce, be a cinematographer, a grip, a gaffer? Does he want to do development?

You have to jump in. Shoot stuff, edit stuff, put it up on YouTube and do some more. (It's the 21st century version of putting on a show in a barn.) No one is going to tap with a magic wand. Economic turnaround isn't going to bring work back from Canada.

And the movie business is a business of who you know. Moody loners with poor social skills get nowhere. Be social, mingle, be nice. Everyone is a genius. Everyone is creative and talented, even the Teamster driver you think is a slob. James Cameron was a Teamster driver.

LA is not New Orleans. If you say you're a director, you better have a reel. If you say you're a writer, be prepared to pull 1/2 a dozen scripts out of your ass.

(And Cary--no successful director fills out applications for fellowships.)

Dr.s & Abortion

"I think that a lot more doctors would provide abortions if they could do so without fearing for their lives or the lives of their families - don't you?"

Actually, no. I think most Dr.s think Dr. Tiller was an extreme case of a man who turned off his emotions to perform late term abortions at $6000 each. Even people who knew him well described him as cold.

Hard choices

Frances Kissling is willing to look the problem squarely in the face and make a hard choice. Of course, most of the Salon readership would rather indulge themselves in magical thinking and pretend that a fetus at 7 months isn't human or viable or anything like them--of course, everyone commenting here was once a 7 month old fetus.

Why can't mothers who are 7 months pregnant just wait 2 more months, deliver the baby to adoptive parents and go on about their merry way? Babies who are deformed, defective and likely to die at birth are excluded.

Rush, O'Reilly and the Rev.

"Them Jews ain't going to let him talk to me," Wright said. "I told my baby daughter that he'll talk to me in five years when he's a lame duck, or in eight years when he's out of office. ..."

Civil rights aren't just for the cool kids

"Since when do imprisoned terrorists get to hold press conferences? "

One phone call to AP isn't a press conference. If the rule of law is in place, then Salon readers asking for the FBI to break down doors of Operation Rescue puts them in the same place as Bill O'Reilly.

Original article: A parent's worst nightmare

Where were the parents' priorities?

"This is yet another reason why people should not be forced to return to work with infants this young."

How was anyone forced? Dad's a banker! Mom was commuting to Napa. Who in their right mind thinks 4 months is a good age for day care?

I know the party line at Salon is that state-run day care would solve everything, but Dad would still have to take the kid out of the car.

Where's Dr. Neuhaus?

Why isn't Dr. Tiller's semi-partner, Dr. Kris Neuhaus, taking over? She still has a license, doesn't she? And why not one of these idealistic med students who keep writing op-ed pieces about how inspired they are to do this work? Is it fear? Or is it distaste?

Kansas is pretty lenient towards doctors who mess up:

in 2003--Kansas 36th in the nation based on the number of serious disciplinary actions, such as license revocation, per 1,000 doctors. Seven states -- Wyoming, North Dakota, Alaska, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arizona and Ohio -- disciplined more than three times as many doctors per 1,000 as Kansas.

What Else Can He Say?

What's he going to say? That she was an idiot, and that they only took her because she boosted their very scant minority enrollment? I don't doubt that she's smart, qualified, brilliant and right for the job etc., but this guy's yapping doesn't mean anything.

Grow a pair, honey

Oh, these damsels in distress. Announce you're joining the NRA and taking lessons at the local gun club. IF you want to be an independent woman, you can't expect Daddy to bail you out.

Pawn the ring, don't sell it, get another job, and get going.

What's your credit rating like? Can you get a card with a big limit? Joint checking? Can you clear it out?

You can't be a grownup woman until you grow a pair.
