The Pubilc and the Truth
[Read the article: We are the Thought Police]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I disagree with Mr. Massing's assumption that all Americans are complicit with the mis-infomation our newscasts have become. If the truth of what is occurring in Iraq has been marginalized by angry American dissidents, I would llok to the public group of Republicans that made if possible for George Bush to win the election in 2000. It is also the same group of angry vitrioloc individuals that shout down and impugn anyone who isn't pro-Bush and pro-war. These people do not represent the totality of the American public.
The words of the soldiers about their experiences in are Iraq echo the words of my husband and his fellow Mariens when they returned after Vietnam, except the public was also angry with the soldiers for fighting in that war.
It is true that our society has become more entertainment oriented. It is also true that Americans have always been zenophobic. Whys do you think Europeans referred to us as the "Ugly Americans" less than fifty years ago. Americans have always accepted violence and brutality against those they feel are dangerous. Reflect on how many brutal, sadistic and murderous cops have been punished for their crimes so if hundreds of thousands have been misled to believe that Iraq was responsible for 9/11, then those same people will be dispassionate about what happens to those people and their country.
Regardless of how you argue the point, the American public is the dupe in this process. The war was started because the government decided to lie about the facts and the main stream media embraced that lie and splashed it across the land. Our media is and has been compromised by power and greed and there is little that the American public can do to affect which stories receive a front-page, above the fold nod at the daily editorial meeting. Funny how almost every major newspaper has the same front page news, isn't it?
Conspiracies run amuck? Naw!

Anonymous Internet Attacks
[Read the article: Think you're anonymous? Watch out.]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It has always been disturbing to me that people go out of their way to be vile towards others, just because they can. I also wonder where and how this type of deep-seated hatred brews to make people treat other people as if they were objects.
It's time, that we as a society begin to examine this type of anti-social behavior and try to change wahtever has allowed these people to express themselves either covertly on the Internet or act-out their aggressions in reality.

Working Women
[Read the article: Divorce: Tool of the devil?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It's seems like they guys in the article spent too much time watching "Ozzie and Harriet" or "Father Knows Best" during the 1950's and '60's! Just how many American households had the economic viability to ensure domestic tranquility while living the American Dream?
American women have worked, raised children and maintained households forever. When we were an agrarian society many wives worked side-by-side in the fields with their husbands while other took in piece-work to provide extra income for the family. This fantasy that women have only contributed to the family by raising children is fallacious. If these guys are so intersted in perserving the family, maybe they might have a talk with all the men who refuse to economically provide for the children they bought into the world rather than sowing their oats in younger, greener pastures!

Pelosi and the Other Dems
[Read the article: Why voters don't like Congress]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Trust...the democrats will do no more to stop funding the war in Iraq than they have managed to do to date. We had all be very afraid of the fact that if these monkeys in office manage to make a pre-emptive strike against Iran, we won't have to worry about who to vote for in 2008. The gang will declare Marshall Law and the dems won't issue a peep against the action!
And you thought that it couldn't get any worse! Well it can and it looks like it will.

Silly People
[Read the article: My neighbor is having coffee with somebody new]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]As usual...you are awesome! Too bad we can't talk in e-mails...I'd love to know how you developed your great compassion and insight.
It's really nice to know that there are real, feeling human beings in the world. You are at the top of your game!

Subprime Dilemma
[Read the article: We are all subprime]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It's about time! Finally, the blame for the current credit crunch is finally being placed on something othert than subprime loans.
As long as our government continues to bail-out the institutions that made these questionable loans or invested in them instead of also creating a safety net for the borrowers, our economy has just begun to tip downward.
Oh yeah...it would also be a good idea for the government to address that trillion dollar deficit that continues to grow relentlessly at break neck speeds. To think that billions of dollars have been "misplaced" or diverted to private contractors by this administration in its quest to bring democracy to Iraq is ludicrous!
The mantra of this administration has been to loot as much as possible because the pipeline will eventually run dry. The guys and girls on the next watch will have to try and resurrect the badly listing economic ship called the United States of America. Sad to say that its going to take several decades to undo what took less than eight years to bankrupt.
