Why are people so surprised?

I'm always amazed at what people will believe. Lieberman was pro-war. After being beaten up about it by Lamont, he made a few weasely comments about how of course he wouldn't buy a Brooklyn Bridge from Bush if he was absolutely certain that it was Bridge and not really just a nice house with entrances on two sides. And people somehow took this to mean that he wasn't pro-war after all? Now they are surprised that, being safely re-elected for 6 years he is once again pro-war? C'mon people. You elected him. The rest of us are stuck with him.

NYC pictures are not so clear

The answer to the question is no, since Amazon's search engine A9 has had the same sort of pictures online for a couple of years now. In any event, I'm in agreement with those who say that you should have no expectation of privacy when you are picking your nose on a public street.

One thing though is that Google should ask the contractor that took the photos in NYC for its money back. All of the pictures there are considerably blurrier than they are in San Francisco (even on the quiet streets where they can't complain that they had to keep moving because of the traffic).

Sorry gang, but a little perspective is in order ...

Hill Street Blues, far and away. Catch the DVDs (sadly, only the first two seasons are out, and the first half of the first season is creaky). But it remains the greatest, as Ali said, of all time. You laugh, you weep with these people. You hope with them.

What this prevents is needed tweaks to the OS

There are lots of things to love about the iPhone, but lots of things not -- a more or less useless keyboard, a lack of blackberry-like shortcuts, etc. The restriction on apps that run in the background will prevent developers from coming up with tweaks to the operating system to improve on these things.

One of the many great things about Apple's beloved (still -- to many of us) Newton is that it is completely open. From the first minute, developers were looking under the hood and creating their own tweaks and shortcuts to make the machine more useable and more useful. Most of the thousands of apps developed (and still being developed) for Newton are of this sort -- not big programs, but little things that offer up improvements on what is already a great machine.

By blocking the ability to post apps that run in the background, Apple is effectively preventing developers from creating such improvements (eg, how about a keyboard that runs in landscape mode?). This is a big loss.

"reluctant" is the wrong word

It's not that Dems are "reluctant" to appear on Fox. They have sensibly decided that they have zero to gain from an appearance, and that they don't want to do anything to assist Fox in its evil-doing.

Monty Python Keyboard Noises

An old Monty Python game (circa 1995) had a goodie that added sound effects to your keyboard. You could make it sound like a manual typewriter (plus, when you hit the enter key you hear a bell "ding" and a carriage return; when you hit delete there was an explosion). Alternately, there were options with the different keys assigned to random laughs or random clapping -- the faster you typed, the more laughs or applause you got. Much fun, until it was overwhelming.

He's Joe McCarthy seeing Commies around every corner

"Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" That, effectively, is his question -- "They" are taking over. Whether he is crazy or not is irrelevant. He is inciting a riot. The guys who stand outside the town halls with assault rifles and hand guns listen to him. He is a very dangerous man.

Doonesbury said it best at the end of the '70s ...

Mike and Zonker sitting at a bar in a cartoon in 1979 ... I don't remember the details any more, but the only solace that they took from the '70s coming to an end was that "this too shall pass", then they clinked their glasses together and Mike said "To a kidney stone of a decade!"

And this decade was way worse ...

WAY too cluttered. WAY too difficult to read

I get it. You are trying to shove everything up into the top of the screen. Bottom line is that everything is cluttered. WAY too difficult to find what you are looking for. WAY too difficult to distinguish what is new from what you've already decided whether to read or not. Really needs to be re-thought. I've been paying money for this site from the beginning. I've been reading it most every day for more than 10 years. You owe me. Pay attention.
