Filibuster away
[Read the article: Senate sleepover]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]So the Democrats cannot force the issue -- but so what, let the Republicans fillibuster away, just keep them on the issue. Ask every GOP Senator facing an election questions in points of order, force them to talk about Iraq ad nauseum. Make pillocks like Tiberius sweat through explaining the latest inane comment. Keep giving ammunition to writers like Howard Meyerson who today described Republican Senators as "spineless specimens," "nullities," adding that "senior Republicans speak loudly and carry no stick -- indeed, they speak loudly precisely because they are so stickless."
Yes it's playing politics -- the politics that turns GOP Senators into ex-Senators, clinging to a title when out of office and getting annoyed if the waiters at the country club forget it. Remember 50% of Republican Senators are up for reelection in 2008, more than 2006, and many in tough seats -- focus on making this a masacre of the GOP on the Hill. If you do that, these guys won't even be able to get decent lobbying jobs, because (a) who woud they lobby in a Democratic Senate and House, and (b) payback for the K-Street Project which is alrady proving "a bitch" and will get worse.
The Democrats cannot right now kick Bush out, impeach Cheney or get a veto-proof vote through, but they can make sure that the blame falls properly where it is due, and that may destroy the Republican party. Keep on grandstanding Harry -- why not take this page from the Republican playbook. Make them come up with their tired excuses, read back their predictions of victory, force them to say what a great guy Bush, Cheney or Gonzales is, hand this rotting albatross of an administration around their neck.
