there is a place in my heart for all scifi and infection movies and lord knows i've watched many of these on the netflix instant. you hit a lot of the big ones (although children of men isn't an infection or zombie movie) but for people interested in further exploring the subject, here are a few more:
the thing
cabin fever (comedy)
all invasion of the body snatchers movies
right at your door (not great)
ravenous (not zombies or infection, but also involves transformations into killers and is very awesome)
30 days of night (not great)
the signal (ok)
dead space: downfall (really not great)
paranoia 1.0 (meh)
the original day of the dead is amazing btw. my favorite of those movies and imo the most explicit social commentary (although it's hard to top the last part of night of the living dead for impact).
and the original andromeda strain was a pretty slow and somewhat dull movie, but it really captured something about the scientific method i think. you rarely see movies just about scientists doing their thing without hot babes (i love the woman scientist in that movie! :)), without action, etc. so i appreciate it for that.
also is it fair to include v for vendetta in this category? the virus isn't the topic of the film but is a shaping force in the setting.
thanks for the good post. it is quite shocking that the mother so actively participated in the sexist attitudes that her sons expressed and then wondered how she would protect her daughter from sexism. seems like it should start with challenging your sons when they repeat sexist claims they pick up from others.
