Good for Google. Here in Richmond VA, there’s been a similar program in place for several years and I think that the benefits far outweigh the potential problems.
Unlike what some of the posters here are saying, the vast majority of homeless Americans are not on the street for long periods of time and don’t suffer from serious mental, drug or alcohol problems. Most homeless Americans, and we’re often talking about families and/or women with children, simply lacked the safety network of friends and family that most of us would rely on in an emergency. They’re temporarily stuck in a very hard place without shelter, but this isn’t because they’re lazy or mentally ill, it’s because they don’t have the support system, the couch or the spare room that can get them through the weeks or months until they’re back on their feet. Contrary to what you may hear, many people who are homeless still manage to hold down jobs and try desperately to maintain connections to their former, more stable lives. The access to a phone number that doesn’t identify as a shelter or halfway house can be the link that moves someone into an apartment or a better job and off the street.
I seriously doubt that the chronically homeless, the 5 to 10% of the total population; the mentally ill, the chronic drug and alcohol users, the mostly older men whom we often associate with homelessness, and the ones that so many posters here find it hard to find sympathy for, are going to use this service. Their lives are often chaotic and closely enmeshed with the legal system, for them the registration and the rules are going to be too much. But for a mother with small children trying desperately not to lose her job while she works to raise the deposit and first month’s rent on a new apartment (not to mention the money down for utilities, plus heat, electric and of course food), for the veteran who’s served his country and has fallen on hard times, and who now wants to re-enter society, this is a window, a connection with a more normal world where voice mail is a part of everyday life and a way up and out of the dangerous whirlpool that is homelessness.
Again, bravo to Google, this is a good thing.
Ok, I need to stop and think here before I start typing…. Calm down, Ok, that’s better. Simply put Tina Fey is a Goddess! The fact that she’s pretty isn’t the point, she’s certainly attractive, but it is the personality, the brains and the wit that vault her past hotness into Goddess-ness. Those glasses don’t hurt either, let me tell you, but that’s just me… This of course comes with the understanding that I have never met the woman, have no reason to suppose I ever will, and in fact know very little about her as a real person. Which doesn’t matter because she’s SO HOT!!! Middle age has most definitely set in, I’m writing mash notes about TV stars… Where will this all end? Here’s hoping it’s not in a restraining order.
Cheers
So if the violence in Iraq goes up, we have to vote for MaCain to spite the terrorists, and if the violence goes down we have to vote for MaCain, because the plan is working so well... I just wanted to be sure I had that clear.
So MaCain was a prisoner for five and half years... Come this fall it will be around five and half years since the American people were taken prisoner in another senseless war. When will we be releasesd?
Yikes!
I agree, after all I understand the ladies in Auatralia get them for their beavers.
