  • Like history taking place right in front of you

The trailer says that this is the story of the first hero. Before that, there were no heroes; the concept was entirely unknown. So when the protagonist crosses the desert to rescue his fair love, she has no terminology to greet him. Instead of swooning and saying "My hero!" she is forced to say, "My... my... there should be a term for what you are, but I don't think there is one yet.

Similarly, the movie's villain must stumble over dialogue like "So, you think you could just walk into my lair and play the... some kind of person who's trying to... do whatever it is you think you're doing. Which is? Really, what DO you think you're doing? I have no idea what it could possibly be."

Other than that, I was impressed by the meticulous research and devotion to historical accuracy on display in this film.

I know that, and you know that, and MOST sane people like us know that, but I wanted to make it clear to all the sane people who might not be sure about it, who might read the comic and give it a try. You have to admit, Carol makes it look like he's flying, and for about 1/100th of a second it could be argued that he actually is flying.

But it doesn't last. That's all I'm saying.

  • Hillary's really pissing me off

Obama had us all soaring there for awhile. It was nice while it lasted. Unable to counter his message and momentum, Hillary seems determined to tether us all into another 52/48 percent eke out win. I'm sure the Dems will win, but I was so desperately hoping for an overwhelming repudiation to the Bush travesty of the past 8 years. 70/30, something like that. Something that the Limbaughs and Hannitys and the neo-cons themselves could not interpret in any other way than the giant national "Fuck You" that they deserve.

Hillary's great at playing the game, she is a true master; but the game is killing us.

If you think you caught me building castles in the sky, I'm sorry. I do realize how silly it is to hope for things, and that I should just accept reality and realize that nothing better is possible.

But Obama's campaign is nothing compared to the castles I would build if I could.

I'd like to see an America where we pursue healthcare for all with the same vigor and passion that we use in planning for war and assuring defense contractors a safe and comfortable lifestyle. I'd like to live in an America where those in power who commit offenses against our constitution are pursued to the ends of the earth and held accountable, viewed with equal anger and as being no less dangerous as those we now pursue half a world away. I believe that it is not greedy or socialism/communism for the citizens of this country to believe that the wealth of our nation be shared to the benefit of all rather than the entrenchment of the few. Oh, there are so many other things I'd like to see, but to list them all would be to lose the thread.

I desperately want to see the paradigm ripped up, shredded, trashed and destroyed. I don't if Obama is the person to do that; I was hoping to vote for Edwards or Kucinich. But I think Obama is more of a paradigm shifter than Clinton is. Hillary is a master of riding the paradigm; she thrives on the paradigm. Please, I think you must admit she hasn't exactly been on the cutting edge of opposing Bush these past several years. Instead, she's shown herself to be a calculator and triangulator time and again. While Bush takes yet another crap on congress and the constitution, Hillary cosponsors flag burning legislation. Calculated. Cynical.

So thank you for reminding me that optimism is a waste of time. Believe me, I'm more cynical than you could possibly imagine. I do understand that the America I envision will NEVER COME TO PASS. Believe me, I am well aware of that. Hardcore realists will make sure of that. Yet for some insane reason I continue to dream of something different, something better. That is my particular curse.
