Yeah as General Lynch is saying the surge is working. Like in the same way my goal to become a multi-millionaire is working. I figure at the rate I am going I'll have total success by the year 2150. Or in the same way a car mechanic tells you he can get your car working if you spend 1000 times the value of the cost of the car in repair costs. Or the surge is working in the same way perhaps that this post is working to get hornet-driver to stop using the word pathetic.
War supporters so dislike not the lefts, but any rational individuals assessment of the Iraq debacle. Do they feel like 5, 10, 15, 20 years doesn't matter since the surge is "working" and we are making "progress"? Do they just want the USA to go at least as long in Iraq as in Vietnam before declaring it a fukkin useless mess and getting out? Or will they not give up until they can get all those defeatists to join them in smelling the poop as perfume?
The pentagon obviously does not have a great history as a paragon of truth telling, but to be fair it is at the behest of their bosses. Take for exmaple the supposedly new and brilliant Petraeus strategy: clear, hold, and retain. The problem is never clearing, we can clear whenever we want on the ground, or even with less effort by bombing. A few 500 lb pounds dropped from the air are very good at clearing an area.
The hard part is the hold and retain. So this new glitzy direction and strategy is not new, but instead woeful; it’s just throwing a few more over-committed soldiers at a problem that requires a half million US soldiers.
In a recent surge operation, a village I can't remember the exact name right now, was touted as a flaming surge success. The reality is only the clearing was a flaming success, but less than a day after turning over the cleared village to 60 Iraqi police, 42 were immediately massacred, 13 others found later with their throats slit, and some, somehow escaped to a neighboring village. Petraeus will call this type of debacle a success, he will, he has to, that’s his job right now.
In April, the numbers of service men in Iraq will start drawing down regardless of the politics and Bush, and Cheney because we are running out of soldiers. They are already stretched beyond the max, by April they’ll have to roll soldiers out and there will be none to roll back in unless that just permanently station all soldiers in Iraq indefinitely. Hell, might as well make them Iraqi citizens they are going to be stationed there so long.
More than the stumbling of this pack of fools running the show, I am more surprised at how easily the American people allow our elected government to so flagrantly lie. Now it’s to the point that government officials lie to us only because that’s what they do. Like cats kill mice, our government lies.
The issue isn’t whether being a missionary is a good or bad thing. The issue is when it was Romneys ass on the line he chose the missionary path, when his ass isn’t on the line he chooses war.
I think we should never go to war without having a no exceptions draft. Not because I am pro-war but because I feel we’ll get involved in a lot less wars. If Bushes daughters could have been drafted and sent to Iraq, would Bush have pounded the war drum? Was it just coincidence that the end of the Vietnam war came soon after draft deferments were disallowed?
If someone feels there is value in going to war, drinking martinis on a cruise ship or shopping at the mall does not constitue supporting the war. War supporters better be willing to sacrifice their own life as well as the life of their children in order to support that war. Otherwise they are nothing more than the loathsome cowards Rudy and Romney are.
Ever since we have had more than enough nukes to completely blow all of civilization back to oblivion, we have not needed the huge military we have for the defense of the homeland. No country would dare attack us without risk of immediate annilation. And as far as terrorists - the $500 billion a year we spent on the military really helped on 9/11 – right. The pentagon as sized now is primarily there to enforce our influence around the globe and to make sure the have mores have more.
How do people work so hard at being ignorant. Since they are Consitutionally the only ones who can declare war, define the scope of a war and further yet fund the war, yes the Congress does get to tell the Pentagon what to do.
As far as Edlman, he is another political appointee who’s only purpose is political - nothing more than another shit stain transferred from Roves underwear into a governing position.
It's amazing how many chickenhawks unapologetically state, the reason they don't fight is that well they got a life, they got things to do, I mean what about their careers, who's going to change the oil in their cars? The fact that they don't even remotely see this as being a flaw in character and reasoning is a statement in itself.
If we had a draft with ZERO exemptions or deferments, I wonder how quickly Jonah would change his tune from "America needs to get its hands dirty and go out there and be tuff, aggressive and start occasional wars", to "America needs to put diplomacy first".
I don't want a draft, but I want even less, cowardly weasels like Jonah trumpeting war when they have no skin in the game.
