  • Symptoms vs illness

[Read the article: Minding our health]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I find the placebo effect interesting, since it shows people can give themselves symptoms of illness like, diarrhea, vomiting, and headaches. I have never heard of the placebo effect actually giving a person an illness. But it begs the question can the placebo effect provide symptoms of healthy well being, even if we are ill?

Which leads me to people being healed by Christian faith healers. Has there been studies on these events? Basic questions I have are: Were they faked, were they actually medically diagnosed before being healed, was the healing permanent or just the result of temporary euphoria?

I had a personal experience with a not serious but quality of life impacting chronic illness. At one point after an especially painful and humiliating test to determine the cause, the illness just went away. At the time I thought the driver to my "cure" was just me being so sick of the medical establishment that I made myself well rather than take another God-damn test or read another goddamn article on the illness, new-age or otherwise. What really happened, I don't know, except something that I suffered with for years went away. Suddenly.

So the only thing I know for sure is that there is a lot we do not know except for this.

There is no positive thought or faith anywhere that will prevent our physical death.

  • Who would you want for Brain Surgery

[Read the article: Bill Clinton looks backward]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What I fail to understand is why people consistently ignore that Republicans either drop a load in their pants in fear or start foaming at the mouth like diseased rabid hyenas at the mere mention of the word “Clinton”?

Isn’t this more worthy of analysis?

I think so, so I'll start. Maybe it's Clintons high job approval ratings. Bill’s End-of-Presidency Job Approval Ratings were higher than any post-war president, Democrat or Republican. While true his favorability ratings were lower, Job Approval indicates how well you led and managed the country. The difference is clear with this question. If you needed brain surgery would you want the excellent surgeon with a mistress on the side or the shitty surgeon who has an impeccable home life? The conservatives ideologically driven scorched earth policy – either we are number one or nobody is - perhaps simply cannot sustain a Democrat as being the best leadership the country has to offer.

And for Democrats to be at worse bashing and at best ignoring the best Democratic president since Kennedy is stupifying. Makes me think of a bunch imbeciles running around in circles smacking themselves over the head with wooden spoons, thinking it will make them smarter.

  • So what

[Read the article: The racial divide, then and now]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Does anybody think that a Democrat has a rats ass in hell of taking S.C. in the general election?

Whatever happens in S.C., for Democrats it ends up at so what.

  • Prophet in the Wilderness?

[Read the article: An old-fashioned thumpin' in South Carolina]

Geesh walter why use the words, "apostle of change"? Maybe you didn’t mean as in apostle of Christ, even though that is it's most common usage, but it sure sounds like halleluja brothers and sisters I have seen the light and Obama is the thirteenth apostle.

Man, poltical reporting and religious epiphanies, whatever.

When obama supporters look to demonstrate Obamas strength, it’s in terms of politics - he can win elections. But then that’s it. There’s nothing beyond that. The similarities between bush and obama are informative. Bush was never good at anyhing except politics – he could win elections, but anything else he touched turned to shit. Obama can win elections but makes sure he doesn't touch anything. Though it would be nice to have a democratic empty suit in the White house rather than a republican one, I’d prefer not to have any empty suit.

You can have idealism and inspiration and actually have taken great risks, and accomplished great things getting there. I know Obama supporters may find history irrelevant (another similarity with bush supporters), but look at Bobby Kennedy.

    Otherwise just embrace your symbols.

    Reagan, the symbol of optimism,

Bush, the symbol of principle and toughness

Obama, the symbol of change and hope.

    You have to wonder

    after having the symbols

    of optimism, principle, and toughness,

we’d end up with the need for the symbols

    of change and hope.

    Symbols are nice,

    on postage stamps,

    and t-shirts.

  • What is surprising is no longer surprising

“As little as three days ago, Obama enjoyed a bare lead.”

If you're smoking dope thats true.

Obama has had a huge lead since the first week of January. Obamas surge started in early December. For the last couple of weeks in December they were even before Obama created a large lead in the first week of January he was able to sustain.

And why is it so surprising that black people would vote for a black candidate? Sorry I don’t think we are all the way there with the color-blind society thing. If anyone hadn’t noticed that Hillary has made a woman presidential candidate “conventional”, they would see it is more surprising to have whites favor a woman president over a man.
