If Not Now, When???!!!!! (My head is exploding!!!)

It looks like, before we impeach the president, we are going to have to impeach Mrs. Pelosi from her position in our party. I'm sick and tired of waiting for these cowards to grow a collective spine, and it is beginning to appear that she is a big impediment to that growth.

"....it'll just result in President Cheney..."

...So Impeach Him Too!!! He's probably just as culpable, if not more so!!!

The War Paradigm and The Second Amendment

Liberals need to start appreciating the second amendment a lot more. Its true purpose is not to guarantee the rights of rednecks to go duck hunting, as Democratic presidential candidates always insist on reducing it to, but rather as the ultimate check on the government, and the ultimate defense against tyranny. Much to everyone's surprise, we appear to be approaching the threshhold of a situation in which we may need it for just that. If, God forbid, that day should ever come, liberals and freedom lovers everywhere will have the NRA to thank for guaranteeing their right to substantively take a stand.

Kristen Breitweiser was a Republican!!!

First of all - the September 11th widows, and Cindy Sheehan, said what they said and did what they did of their own volition. Nobody, least of all the Democrats, put them up to it.

Second of all - nobody forced the American public to respond to these women the way that they did. These stories of tragedy and loss clearly touched a chord and elicited and authentic response from people. This political reality clearly irritates Ann Coulter, but she is apparently too stupid to recognize it for what it is - a reality. Thus, she argues against it. Its kind of like the captain of a ship arguing with the iceberg that he's headed straight for.

Finally - prior to September 11th, Kristen Breiteweiser and the rest of the Jersey Girls were Republicans!!

Ann Coulter is so stupid its unbelievable.

Drugs are a matter of fate...

Drugs are a matter of fate. Whether it be the divine hand of God, or deep seated psychological drives, drugs and the urge to use them come from something that is bigger than us, and that is effectively beyond our control. There is no real choice in the path to drug abuse. It is either before you, or it is not. If this is your fate, than going through it and ultimately surviving it is simply your life's challenge and work. Friends and loved ones, and even the government, can help you meet this challenge, but they cannot spare you from it. All that you can do, as the friend of an addict, is accept this truth, look for the places where you can help, and step up there.

Dodgeball is Fun!!!

I am 31 years old, and a few years ago I started playing Dodgeball for the first time since I was in 9th grade. I don't play it for any nostalgic reason, or to recapture anything from my youth. I play it because it is incredibly thrilling and fun. Few things are more satisfying and enjoyable than deftly maneuvering yourself out of the path of a speeding ball and watching it whiz right past you. There's a kind of Zen aspect to it. There is also a thrill of the hunt aspect to stalking your opponent in plain view and nailing him with the ball when he is least expecting it.

I am not an athletic person, and have never been good at, or enjoyed, any of the "legitimate" sports, like football, basketball, baseball, etc. Dodgeball is the one game that I have ever really deeply and authentically enjoyed playing, and I was thrilled when I found out that there were adults playing it now. It has become one of the highlights of my week, and I think most of the other people in my league would say the same.

I remain skeptical...

... of the woman who argues that there is no legitimate sexual consent to a man, that all heterosexual intercourse is rape by its very nature, and that any woman who claims otherwise is so self deluded as to be not trusted to speak for herself. I don't care how much research she has compiled on the subject. Her previous work on the subjects of sex and pornography, and her position toward women who disagree with her, compromises her position as a legitimate, objective source.

Response to wayloopy

My recollection of her work (which I read in college about 10 years ago) is that she and Dworkin were pretty much on the same page with regard to their views about men, women, and sex in general. They both seemed to me to argue that heterosexual intercourse was inherently rape. They did posit a post-Patriarchal existence in which that wouldn't be the case, but didn't offer any clues or insight into what this would be or how to get there, other than the elimination of pornography, which would somehow magically transform us all.

Like I said, I remain skeptical of any position advanced from this point of view.

As far MacKinnon losing the war of ideas: take a look at some of the letters in response to this piece. It seems to me that her point of view is alive and well in at least some places. So don't tell me to just "get over the porn."

Response to Julie

"All sex, even consensual sex between a married couple, is an act of violence perpetrated against a woman."

Catharine MacKinnon

I cut and pasted this quote from a site called www.brainyquote.com. A google search of "catharine mackinnon quote" will turn it up.

I have not the time to further investigate this, and its been 10 years since I last read anything by her, so I will simply let this be.
