I saw that Washington Journal interview with Lynch. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Here's one exchange:

WJ: Major General, there is that sentiment by many Americans that this was an ill-founded war. How do you respond to that?

Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch: Well, I'll you what. What we're doing right now, is fighting terrorism here so we don't have to fight it back home. That's why we're in Iraq right now, in my opinion, right now focused on fighting in this global war on terrorism. I believe that's true. Sometimes I worry that our nation has a short-term memory, and they forget what happened on 9/11. All I know is I got kids, and soon I'll have grandkids, and I'm fighting terrorism here so I don't have to fight 'em back home.

Glenn, I've only been reading your blog for the last two weeks or so, but I'm amazed by your ability to nail these guys with their own words. I'm continually reminded of a phrase by the great Lord Buckley, "when he laid it down, WHA-BOM, it stayed there!!!"

As for Tucker van Carlton III (whatever) -- why does this guy still have a show?

On another note, I'd sure like to know what O'Hanlon and Pollack's fellow Serious Thinkers over at Brookings think of Monday's media blitz...

Second, if either of these front-runners takes a principled stand, their candidacy is likely to receive a substantial boost. It is clear from polling that Americans in general are against illegal wiretapping and against retroactive immunity. I think that taking a stand here, for example, could propel Obama over Clinton.

I agree, and I'd really like to see exactly that, but I fear that if Obama moved first, Ms. Triangulator would immediately make the same move. Of course, sometimes leadership requires taking such risks. And having both candidates standing against telecom immunity is obviously the most desirable outcome in any case, irrespective of any campaign calculus.

If he can't be president, I think Chris Dodd would be the anti-Cheney as vice president. Obama-Dodd has a strong appeal to it, don't you think?

I'd like to see Dodd as Senate Majority Leader myself. How did Harry Reid get that job?!?!

As soon as the Democratic nominee is selected, the entire force of the GOP attack machine will bear down on that nominee. This attack machine has been built and honed over decades; it is formidable, and employs all forms of media, from talk radio to major newspaper columns to television, email, blogs, websites, direct mail, and extensive ground networks.

Gee, I wish we had one of them Attack Machines!

The ideological brotherhood of movement conservatives within the ranks of the myopic military and the profit-driven media...

That would be an interesting thing to look at right there. How much of the shoddy journalism associated with the military analysts story is due to:

    • Profit motive
    • Ideological "alignment"
    • Laziness and lack of professionalism

I've been assuming profit and laziness, but when Brian Williams professes himself a Rush Limbaugh fan, I have to wonder.

(I don't count Fox News as a journalistic enterprise here...)
