If you read that book, a collection of essays, all this would sound very familiar. These women were furious. Honestly, it seems more humane to just get a divorce than to live with all that rage. Ultimately your in charge of your own life. Blaming everything on your husband is what Sartre would say is an act of bad faith which stems from your fear of being responsible for yourself, causing rage and Nausea.
Guess I see both sides here. Like many I feel bad that people can't afford to buy a house.
On the other hand, sneering at people who don't give their kids cool enough names for you?
"'Did you tell him that interest rates are going up? Did you tell him to go blow himself?'
Jeff informs me he did not."
So cute! You live in a world where you think yelling at your accountant will do some good. Jeff's a very lucky man.
I live in Denver and I used to read RMN. I feel bad for the people out of a job, but I can see why it went out of business:
1. Craigslist
2. 2 pages of ads then a one column AP story.
3. Google News, Yahoo News, Espn.com, etc.
The RMN did some decent investigative reporting, it also did it's fair share of John Benet Ramsey stuff, it beat the Columbine story to death, and their columnists were essentially boring, p.c. bloggers.
I sympathize with the author. I was ready to leave home at 16. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to start making a living, live on your own, etc, at that age. So the places you do hang out at are not entirely legit.
That 3 million runaway kid number is amazing. I know plenty of people whose teenage years were like this though. Who lived in make shift communities. Many of them never really reconnected with their parents at all.
You thought it was legit? It was technically ok? What's the penalty, if any? I'm not really judging. If you can stand by what you are doing, feel free, if not don't. You owe this favor to your friend as much as she owes it to you to not put you in a position of jeopardy. Is she worth it? Would she do the same for you?
Good luck. FWIW, the main issue, imho, is that you are in this situation to begin with. Think about the decisions that led you here. They'll tell you alot more than what CT and the rest of us will.
Republican Hypocrites. Earmarks! What did they do about them when they were in charge, the milked them. Looks to me like Obamas a realist, wants to get things done now even while knowing where the bs is. Good for him.
Get an abortion. Saletan needs a new hobby.
"Americans say the British drive on the "wrong" side of the road. No, they just drive on the other side of the road."
Always putting words in other peoples mouths. Years of travelling taught you thus Rick? Pat yourself on the back.
You're a dilettante showing people where to drink in Ireland or wherever. Don't get too high on yourself.
Prostitution/solicitation are crimes in the same way jaywalking or speeding is a crime. IMHO they shouldn't be illegal at all. He's like MLK, breaking the law for a higher good.
How are you supposed to tell if somebody has a killer in them? I used to think OJ was the nicest dude covering the NFL. It's got nothing to do with race, the fact is most people don't regularly deal with murderers. Murder is relatively rare, which is why it's big news when it happens. The media goes nuts over it and always will, it sells.
Weddings are totally a chic thing. I don't know any guys who give a shit about this stuff.
Don't be surprised if you get run over. I get the impression she wanted to be a martyr. Life in Oregon was too banal for her. You're not going to get a documentary made about you by just signing protest letters at OU.
You are so sarcastic/clever/witty I actually have no idea what you really think about anything. How cool are you!
"I turned 38 this year and am still single, still in debt, still renting a one-bedroom, still spending most weekend nights alone. I'm also really starting to feel my age -- I don't bounce back as quickly from physical and emotional injuries. "
Being single isn't bad per se. Lots of people are in terrible marriages. You have your freedom.
One bedroom apt? So? How much do you need?
Most weekends alone? That can be peaceful and quiet. Maybe you actually like that. I admit it's not easy to find companions that are fun to hang out with and it would be cool to have some. You have massive company though. Look at craigslist.
Can't bounce back as quickly physically? We all get old. Enjoy the vitality you have.
Can't bounce back emotionally? Like CT said - reframe, you have experiences. Experience is valuable but not easy.
Quick advice: buck up a little bit. Go for some long walks. Try to get some fresh air. Lighten up in general. Find a hobby. Play some scrabble. Don't let the perfect life be the enemy of the good life you actually have.
As Emerson said, "Envy is ignorance and imitation is suicide." I have no doubt you've got some good things in your life. Don't disregard them because of some idea of life you *should* be living.
An article by Camille tells you what she really thinks. Take note hipsters! You can learn from this. If everyone was as candid, un-pc, open minded and vivacious as Camille we could have real discourse. Anyone else listen to talk radio? No. They're all in their smug little boxes. Its too much either Obama's perfect or Obamas evil. Nice to have a serious thinker around. Cheers Camille! Best reason for Salon's continued existence.
