Thanks for your reply. I really admire you're writing so much. I probably know you from SYA mostly- and probably Broadsheet as well.

I remember that letter you're talking about - and how heartbreaking. I do understand - I'm pretty good now- but came up with nothing and know what that sort of leanness feels like. I feel really blessed personally but I see a lot around me that is just too much to bear. It is only getting worse and even doing ok myself I know feel how tenuous it is and worry. (Even living pretty comfortably I only recently got health insurance and worried ceaselessly about that.)

I read a letter to Dear Abby the other day where a whole family drama was provoked by a nephew drinking all of the milk a family was trying to stretch for week for their young child. I cried reading that. And we know as the prices of food and gas rise these things will only get harder for everyday people.

I don't think any of our candidates knows what the cost of a gallon of milk is. This is the stuff that really matters. Life and death matters.

I don't want to come at it from a posture of victim hood and grievance though. I want to come at it from the perspective of fixing things and making real change. I really think we can do it.

Anyhow, its late. Sleep well and pleasant dreams.

    "No more fear."

You're right, of course, but did you see those videos? Damn.

It is going to be a tough road ahead. But I am feeling idealistic! :)

Yes, war does stimulate the economy. But I think what we need to get to is a fundamental rethinking of our economics. Not just talking about stimulus and growth, but the actual- usually hidden costs of stimulus and growth- which is often human suffering (and environmental degradation- which causes more human suffering...externalities such as they are.)

All of it is really complicated- and I don't have all of the training or vocabulary to get at it completely. But - no- artificial redistribution is not likely to work or represent a just solution to our problems. I think we start with getting rid of the kleptocracy we have in action and work from there. Having a system that serves us rather than the other way around as it stands.

I'm tired and not sure all of that makes sense but yes, it is a crucial election!

How is Olberman implicated in this? Nothing from that video he said was sexist. Critical but not sexist. I think the guilt by association is repunant - one of the fox news like tactics and it undermines the value of an argument to use that process. (This editorial style is really undermining the quality of salon in general.)

I watch Olberman all the time- and I'm not trying to single you out , I'm just perplexed by this accusation, and I think is was Wes who keeps saying it- but I just don't get it.

Olberman has been railing against the war and is tough on any one associated with it. Clinton is becasue she voted to authorize it. To be critical of her policy and candidacy based on the facts is not sexist.

  • What I just don’t get

[Read the article: Obama says he would have gotten rid of Penn]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

is how Penn thought he could represent both parties in this case and not be called out on it. He’s supposed to be a great strategist. Surely there was someone else in his firm that could have sat down with Columbia? I say this with all sincerity no sarcasm intended. Is it simply greed? How could he not understand even the appearance of conflict could be damaging to HC?

I don’t support HC but it looks like she really got burned by this douche unfairly.

Also, for that matter- if you’re running a campaign as large as hers – don’t you get the right to demand exclusivity? Don’t these people have to sign contracts?

Am I hopelessly naïve? Maybe I don’t want to know the answer to that one.

  • How on earth is playing up stereotypes of the dumb blond and dorky smart brunette particularly feminist?

I mean come on! I love Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They are hillarious and and have brought a lot to SNL. But - and I havent' seen this movie yet- here and most definitely on Thirty Rock there is nothing particulalry bold about playing out the staid roles of smart brunette and dumb blonde. Maybe they turn this on its head in the movie? (Doubt it- repeat- look at the formula played out on 30 rock.)

And everyone know Christopher Hitchens is a douche bag. Pretty smart and often entertaining but a douche bag nonetheless.

Cherry picking problems like his article or a movie that is what - 20 years old? - that is arguably pretty strongly feminist- really helps to perpetuate the humorless feminist stereotype too! Bravo!

Better than bitching about a single year old column - or 20 year old movies- or the latest celebrity bimbo debacle maybe you could take a note from Amy Poehler- the last quote of your column:

"The way to do it," said Poehler, "is to do what men do, which is you just assume power. You're not grateful for it."

I'm so bored, tired and fed up with identity politics and victimhood! What the hell good does it do anyway?

I'm not familiar with the song - but I'll definitely check it out!
