Worthy discussion
[Read the article: Love me tenor]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Well, my thought, as a "classical" musician, is this:
a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
All music is good.
What is better is having the opportunity to study it, to play/sing it. It doesn't matter what the genre is, folks; just get out there and DO it.
I come from a musical family and count myself one of the luckiest people alive. I got to listen to Lucia di Lammermoor at one relative's house, and Glenn Miller at another's. How great is that?!? There were pianos everywhere. I love the blues and rock, and even can find it in my heart to admire the Bocellis and Brightmans of the world. Why? Because, as others have mentioned, for some this style IS the epitome of "cultured art". Who am I to judge them? Perhaps they didn't grow up with opera, or orchestras, or pianists, or string quartets. Opera manqué--[I hope the accent appears properly, those little question mark things are annoying when the font won't "take"]--IS better than nothing, and at least people are exposed to a somewhat operatic style; who knows, maybe they'll be so thrilled that they'll go out and buy an operas greatest hits or something. Which brings to mind the writer who mentioned Hooked on Classics, or some such thing. We had a limited budget when I was a child. My parents bought the 1950s equivalent, which has the same snippets of orchestral stuff--just enough to grab your attention and make you want to hear the entire thing. This, no doubt, explains my extreme addiction to buying recordings of the real stuff as soon as I got my first job!
So, sorry to be long-winded.
Get yourself and/or your kids involved in music. You'll never regret it [get a good teacher, mind you]. Don't criticise that which you cannot do. Sure, have your opinion. As a pianist, I'd LOVE to be able to sing as well as Sarah Brightman, and I'm perfectly aware that she is not Angela Gheorghiu.
We need to get MORE people exposed to MORE music styles in a MORE user-friendly manner. Nobody's opinion is more worthy than another's, so stop with the attack responses. You put bad attitude onto music. THAT is the real sin here.

Well written review
[Read the article: "The Painted Veil"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I agree with ~Sands~: this is a very well-written piece, informative without being forthcoming of plot details.
I look forward to seeing the movie, and would love to see more reviews like this one. Stephanie Zacharek, I'll look for your stuff from now on. Thank you!

Hue
[Read the article: Colorblind]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]So much time spent analyzing shades of black. Anyone ever spend time analyzing shades of white? Scandinavian descent vs. Italian? Albanian [who seem to be the whitest of the white] vs. Greek? I mean, COME ON. It seems to me that those who condemn someone because they're not "black enough" should have those who condemn someone because they're not "white enough". WHERE does it end?!?!? Sure, it is nice to know where your ancestors, recent of far-removed, came from. But guess what? You're an American now; respect your personal history, but GET OVER IT.

Make HIM get out
[Read the article: Should I leave my alcoholic husband?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You've got 2 young children, have done all the "right" stuff, and still he's a drunk. I agree that you and he should not be together, but to suggest that you, the mother, leave with the 2 kids is irresponsible. I don't think that too many of the writers here have ever done the "single parent" thing, or they'd not be so quick to advise leaving. You know, you CAN get him kicked out. Call the police when he's really in a haze, let it be known to the authorities that you're afraid of and for him. If worse comes to worst, petition for a 72-hour hold; they'll basically lock him up and determine, psychologically, if he is a danger to himself or to others. And there will be the documentation you need. People can be forced into treatment. I know, I know, it probably won't "stick"---but it might. And you'd have bought yourself and your children some breathing space.
But YOU and the children need to stay put; HE needs to be removed.
BTW--it would be helpful, I'd think, if you knew what the family trigger was that set him off so. You don't mention his family circumstances or history. This drunkenness thing doesn't come from nowhere. Just asking.

Nicely written.
[Read the article: "Breach"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm writing because too many people DON'T, when the topic isn't sensational or sophomoric. So, thanks for the great writing, you've made me want to endure a movie theater to see Chris Cooper [the great] on the big screen, instead of waiting for the DVD to come out.

Oooooooof!!!! Spellcheck, PLEASE.
[Read the article: Queens of the Stone Age]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Undo vs. undue:
"But the authors of "The Invisible Sex" feel that focus puts undo emphasis on weapons and the "man the hunter" theme."
I take it that there IS something along the lines of "do emphasis" as well.
It is too bad the authors don't take the time to manually--i.e. visually--check
what they're written. Oh, wait. Editors! More disappointment.

...but not at night
[Read the article: Bored? Lonely? Take a walk]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]No walking for single females after dark, though. Maybe in small towns. But here in the big, bad midwest metropolis? Uh-uh. Sure, maybe I HAVE watched Law & Order too many times, but who wants to take the risk?
Sure, walking in the day is quite another matter, and I don't want to be a big wet blanket on everyone's love-a-thon here, but hey! reality can BITE.
