  • Sizing

    [Read the article: Opus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I happen to believe that large clothes should cost more than smaller ones. Why? More materials needed to make it. Sure, super-large XXX things usually are a mite higher in cost. Size 6 shouldn't cost as much as size 16. Logical. Those of us who maintain a nutritionally-healthy BMI (body mass index) are, basically, subsidizing the larger people. SO, making the heftier pay more for the greater fuel used to haul their "bigness" in a plane only makes sense. I'd like my rebate now, please. I'll be happy to step on the scale.

  • Tremendous article--thank you

[Read the article: Who's afraid of Michelle Obama?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Great writing, clearly expressed. Well done. I hope articles such as this will be used as a model for future campaign-related writing. Unfortunately, (*sigh*) it won't. It IS a breath of fresh air, though, and, like a well-thought-out sermon, really "breaks open" the subject. I say breaks open in the christian sense--as in "breaks open the gospel". No, I'm not a christian, but the analogy was too good to miss. Thanks again.

  • Loud movies

[Read the article: Stop the noise!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

(I didn't read all responses, so apologize if this is redundant.)

Anyone besides me refusing to lose their hearing in a movie theater? Oh yeah, I forgot--one MUST have the crashing cars, bomb explosions, crashes and screams, to have the full movie experience. Movies have turned into a very unpleasant experience; one which I'll willingly forgo. Get it on DVD if it is good, save your money for gas if it's not!

  • Background noise

[Read the article: "PUMAs": Angrier than I thought]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What is with the background noise in your video? Is it necessary? No. Is it annoying? Yes. (I certainly am loath to call it 'music').

But, speaking of background noise brings me to my point: all the commentary, talking-head to talking-head, doesn't really represent anyone or anything other than the 'heads' themselves. Responding to their divisiveness, whilst fun fun fun, is counterproductive. (I know, I know--I'm guilty, too). We've already had the world's longest presidential campaign; now the pundits are assigning gender AND age roles to the electorate. KINDLY stop doing so. R. Traister--you're not old enough to tell me what I think, so quit lumping us all together. SHEEEEEESH. "PUMAs" indeed. Next it'll be "Grey panthers". which is equally derogatory, IMHO. Why don't you FORCE a division between Clinton's former supporters and Obama supporters? Why don't you play right into the hands of the right-wing political machine? Why don't you attempt to become the news? Isn't that what "reporters" are all about nowadays? Don't forget the "worship-a-thon" of the late Tim Russert. Nice guy, but come ON--3+ days of reporterial obsequiousness? A fine example of how to not cover actual issues, which are plentiful yet ignored. A sad state of affairs. Well, this got over-long and rant-y, and I apologize, but there it is.

  • Dilemma

[Read the article: I'm afraid I'm doing the wrong art]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It sounds to me like you got a ration of crap, at some point in your life, about being a visual artist, and now are confused. Am I any good, or not?--that sort of thing. You use the word "crafts", for what you like to do, yet--are ambiguous because "crafts" aren't artsy enough. Is that right? You say "I'm not a crazy, free, liberated person who is in the artist tribe." You are making a big mistake here--the kind (excuse me) a non-artist makes. Art=discipline. TONS of discipline. Your romantic "crazy-free" description describes NONE of the artists I know. I include musicians here, too, since I am one. Either DO the art, and quit over-analyzing, or keep yourself in the writing field, where you're very good. If you're merely looking for external validation, you've got to realize---praise in the arts MEANS something and is in short supply, usually. Your every brush-stroke ain't gonna garner rave reviews, as all the arts are a PROCESS as well as a result. When you do get the praise, it is glorious. But you've got to do the time--like, every day, doubts or no. Most people don't have the internal stamina for a life in the arts. Self-discipline is the key. I wish you success in solving your dilemma.

  • Join Bat Conservation International

[Read the article: Dark night for bats]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I've been a member for years. The science they do is VITAL. Buy some stuff from them, contribute. Put up a bat house--or two. Remember the good work that bats do FOR US. I, too, hope that Salon heeds the calls of members, and includes a lot more science reporting (but not the TV-fluff & scare kind).

  • Triple Crown

[Read the article: And the next great American beer will be...? ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Back in the 60s, PBR sponsored the Triple Crown. As a child in the Twin Cities, (then as now home of many beers), and loving horse racing, it was kinda cool to hear about a beer that wasn't "Hamm's, the 'beer refreshing'"! Guess racing got waaaaaay too tony for Pabst. Unfortunately.
