Living in the red state of Tennessee, this blue dot was encouraged by the Oscars. No it was not in your face--but Clooney's early speech and the very presence of Brokeback felt good. Crash is an excellent movie with a theme of the complexity of bigotry. It is not a simple problem.

I disagree with the author regarding Oprah's creepiness. I don't think she was creepy at all. She was angry and her decision to confront him publicly was a brave and direct act that is uncommon in our current culture. There are many ways she could have dealt with her anger, but she chose to do it person to person in a public forum. She didn't flog him in an article or in an interview--where she talks about him without talking to him personally--she did it to his face. This is a rare occurance. Rarely does a public person admit they were wrong--much less deal with their anger in public. When I look at the politics of the last decade--how I wish for such honest, direct and open grappling with conflict instead of blame and lies spread through the media.
Intense anger can make us uncomfortable--but her choice to confront him directly sets a great example of dealing with anger in the public eye.
