thorin01 is 100% correct

Each year of my working life (not as lengthy as some, but still) I've noticed my wages buying less and less while costs go up and up.

How is it that our society and our government wring their collective hands saying that we're not spending enough, but took nearly TEN YEARS before giving an absolutely miniscule raise to the minimum wage?

It's impossible to save money when all you have is already going out the door the moment you get it. Remember the phrase "working poor"? We should all be ashamed that such a phrase could be used to explain millions of Americans.

I am firmly convinced that the past two presidents we've had in this country didn't give a damn about the working people in this country. It was all about profits and moving wealth upward and moving manufacturing jobs overseas. Jobs that you used to be able to raise a family upon. Remember those? Those all slipped away after NAFTA. Then, the name of the game for those at the top was selling the infrastructure of our country out from under us. Huge profits on the short end, but terrible in the long term.

Its infuriating. I've cut every corner I can. I don't go out to eat, I don't blow money on expensive clothes, I don't take vacations. I work to pay down my student loans, other debts from college, bills and food. And I still have to pull out the bastard credit card toward the end of the month...to buy food. What gives?

Excellent Journalism

Imagine the pain and suffering we could have all avoided had other "real" journalists been as critical, tenacious and insightful as Stewart is.

Not only in regard to the economy- but the Iraq war, the lawbreaking of the past administration, the corruption, torture policies, etc.

For being a "fake" news show, and a comedy show to boot, The Daily Show is clearly and repeatedly demonstrating how "real" journalists are shirking their duties and dropping the ball in a major way.

Asshat

When Guantanamo is closed, it isn't as though they're going to give each of those prisoners fifty bucks, a pat on the back, and turn them loose. Okay? If they are terrorists they will still be subject to justice. Closing Guntanamo is a brilliant symbolic move. When we close the place where we tortured prisoners, and then say we aren't going to torture, it proves that we're not just spouting phrases but backing them up.

And as far as "Europeanizing" the country, what does he mean? Functioning healthcare? An economy where an atrocious disparity of wealth is disallowed? An education system that actually WORKS? If this is "Europeanizing" America- I'm all for it! Its far past time we grow up and join the rest of the civilized world, and refocus our priorities upon what really maters- the well-being of our citizens and a functioning infrastructure.

Original article: Scoring Gibbs vs. Cheney

Cheney is politically irrelevant

He's a tired, hateful, angry old man who's afraid of everything in the world that he cannot kill or control. Now that he's been removed from the most powerful office he's ever held and sent into the private sector, he can only rant and rail against the world that's changing around him- a nation that's leaving his paranoid ideology in the garbage where it belongs.

I'd almost feel sorry for him if he wasn't the most cold blooded, heartless psychopath that ever held such a high office in our nation. He should be left to rot in prison for the rest of his natural life.

The fact that Gibbs pointed out that Cheney is nothing more than an old, raving lunatic isn't disrespectful in the least - it's the truth.

I'll believe that Jon Stewart was unfair

and out of line with his questions the day that NBC does an in depth report regarding the conflict of interest with weapons manufacturers and the defense department vs. what is reported on television.

In short, when pigs fly.

Original article: George W. Bush, author

Should be a pretty flat read

after all, what kind of controversy can be in an book written by a man who can't recall any mistakes he made as President?

Regardless...

Yes, abstinence only education is ineffective and should be replaced by comprehensive sex ed.

BUT...the birthrates for the year 2007 were the largest in American history. The "baby boom" of the post WWII years was actually less. Imagine how this will play out in the future with our already diminishing resources- both physical, environmental and social.

Americans need to be having less children- period! When I see stories in the media about the Iowa family who just had their 14th kid, or Octo-mom, it makes me ill. This is nothing to celebrate, it's selfish and irresponsible. Americans are the largest resource hogs on the planet per capita. Do we really need this many more?

The robber baron mentality weakens our domestic economy

It is past time that the wink and nod way of doing business goes away. For decades, corporations and executives have been able to skim profits and commit outright theft and conveniently squirrel away all of their money in offshore accounts beyond the reach of the IRS.

It needs to stop. From Dick Cheney and Halliburton funneling untold billions of OUR tax dollars offshore, to banking giants locking away shareholder money- the greed and robber baron mentality needs to end. The Cayman Islands (beyond being a beautiful resort location- I've heard) are an openly acknowledged cash stash for companies and individuals who don't want to pay their fair share in taxes.

It's this mentality and behavior that allows an unfair tax burden to be shifted to the middle and poorer classes. It also creates a lawless atmosphere and lack of ethics that creates the economic situation we find ourselves in.

Can these changes be made? Now is the time to find out. Now, while we're still angry and willing to fix the problems. Not in a year, when the market starts to rebound and everyone is back to kissing banker ass and giving them all a free pass for everything.
