It's 2008
[Read the article: Hillary's bridge back to the 20th century]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Not 1993.
As great as the 1990's were under Bill Clinton, it's essential that the next president (whomever she or he is) focus on leading America into the 21st century. The world is much different now than it was in the 90's.
To take a line from The Great Gatsby: "You can't repeat the past!"

Coked-Out
[Read the article: Cokie Roberts speaks out on the war on behalf of the American people]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Can't let facts stand in the way of Serious Media Opinions by Serious Pundits.
The amount of outright lies and disconnect from reality in the media's reporting is astonishing. It's far past time for people to appear on these shows and be blatant in calling these liars out. It needs to be done and repeatedly! We need individuals to bash on these viewpoints until they collapse.
I'm grateful on a daily basis for people like Glenn but we need a media sea change where facts and reality are reported instead of talking points.

That's okay...
[Read the article: Hearings full of sound and fury, changing nothing]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm sure that all of the soldiers who are putting their lives on the line every single day in Iraq will have no problem waiting for the next President, since Congressional Republicans seem completely unwilling to pull their thumbs out of their asses.

Iraq Hearing Coverage, Anyone?
[Read the article: Thank you, Rush Limbaugh!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Is any coverage being planned regarding the hearings of Crocker and Petraeus?
Live on C-Span right now: Senator Jeff Sessions furiously humping the leg of General Petraeus.

Even John Lennon admitted as much:
[Read the article: Through a bong, darkly]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"As I told Rolling Stone, it's the same people who have the power, the class system didn't change one little bit.
Of course, there are a lot of people walking around with long hair now and some trendy middle class kids in pretty clothes. But nothing changed except that we all dressed up a bit, leaving the same bastards running everything."

Today's youth is not apathetic
[Read the article: Through a bong, darkly]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]A lot of posters have commented on the seeming apathy in today's youth in comparison to the youth of the 1960's. I don't fault the perception, since the mass media constantly pumps the idea of youthful superficiality and consumerism into our consciousness.
However, I would make one point which I find very striking when comparing the 1960's to today. In the 1960's (from what I can gather based upon my intense interest in 1960s music) - the voices of the young were actually given a voice by the media! Steve Allen interviewed Bob Dylan in 1963. The media focused their attention upon young artists. They gave them platform and a voice. Today? Not so much. You might now encounter a piece on rare occasion which is aimed to "seek out" the opinions of today's youth. Most of the time, however, the media fixates upon the opinions of people over fifty and doesn't seem to give a damn about the opinions of anyone under thirty- unless they're trying to sell us something.
Believe me, the youth are paying attention and they do hold strong progressive opinions in regard to our total pooch-screw in the Middle East, the economy, the scarcity of jobs, women's rights, gay rights and the rights of ethnic minorities. If you dig for those opinions, I guarantee you'll find them. Try the internet- everyone is connected online now and it's the new forum for ideas, especially in people under thirty.

Heterosexism rears its ugly head again
[Read the article: Holy sex!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Thanks for publishing this. It's good to know that as long as you're straight and in a monogamous relationship it's fine and dandy that you sexually satisfy each other.
Too bad I'm not straight.
Really, Salon, I thought I'd stumbled on the Focus on the Family website when I clicked on this article. These bigots need less credence, not more. Don't help them.

Outsourcing Torture
[Read the article: "We'll make you see death"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]First we outsourced jobs to other nations.
Then we outsourced the jobs of our soldiers to trigger-happy Blackwater psychopaths.
Then we outsourced interrogation and torture to shady organizations and individuals who were happy to do it for us.
I think it's time we outsource Cheney, Rice, Gonzales and the rest of their ilk to the Hague.
And after that they can be outsourced to a Federal Prison.

Create your position by creating a dialogue
[Read the article: How can I get a writing job?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Don't know if this has been mentioned by other posters, but...
It may be a good idea to create your position with a publication or an editor through creating a dialogue.
Pitch ideas, send samples. It's not so much that they will hire you on the spot, but it gives them an idea of your capabilities. They see your style, they see your interests. And if you contact them over a period of time they see the growth of your work. They can see you developing ideas and, most importantly, they know that you are dedicated.
This is true whether you are contacting someone for writing jobs, a gallery to show your artwork, or as a musician looking for gigs. It's all about creating a dialogue to show off your talents. Very rarely is it a lucky, one shot deal.

Fantastic!
[Read the article: Rep. Jackie Speier comes out swinging]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Talk about starting off on the right foot! How heartening to know that she is starting her tenure giving voice to the American people on such a profoundly important topic.
