  • Let Them Eat Cake!

[Read the article: You can't stop a tidal wave with a fork]

The more I look around the country, the more it seems to be sliding into what French society was before the Revolution- grossly wealthy individuals grabbing up all of the resources, wealth and power while letting the citizenry starve.

The mantra of American Capitalism at its present is to sell the infrastructure of the nation out from under the American population just so CEO's and corporations can fatten their already egregious compensation packages.

The American people are sick of having to work two jobs just to barely keep their heads above water. The days of "getting ahead" and providing for your own and your families futures are long behind us and they will stay gone as long as we shrug our shoulders to inept government regulation, corporate greed, and our own culpability in consuming goods produced by these same multinational corportations which are undercutting our own quality of life.

  • The last line of the article nails it

[Read the article: Back to the future]

It truly is the sociopolitical progress to which we must focus our attention. A culture and society which treats individuals as assets rather than commodities or even liabilities, will naturally foster an environment where the achievement of individuals is encouraged at the benefit of all.

I think about the technology available to us now, and I'm truly amazed, especially when one considers the advancements in medicine and communication. I look at medical technology and treatments from ten to fifteen years ago and am astonished at the advancements we have made in regard to medicine.

And who gives a damn about hovercars in comparison to the internet, which has allowed instantaneous global communication to become a reality? I'm still amazed that I can chat online in real time with friends in Europe, whom I never likely would have become acquainted with had it not been for technology.

We live in a time of great possibility, where our technological achievements have the potential to foster enormous positive changes for all of humanity. We have the capacity to develop green energy to combat the catastrophe of global warming. We have the capacity to treat and even eradicate diseases, as well as increase the quality of life for individuals throughout the globe.

The responsibility we now must accept is making choices which are beneficial for our global society. Our actions and choices are now too far-reaching to focus solely upon personal gratification.

When I think optimistically about the future, I imagine a world where there is a cure for AIDS, green and renewable energy, social equality and an improvement of life for individuals in impoverished circumstances.

And that's a hell of a lot better than a jet pack, don't you think?

  • Beato Saint Hume

    [Read the article: Manufacturing belief]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What consistently cracks me up about Atheistic proponents is their act of reverence for others of the same mind. Whether it be Darwin, Hume, et al, the reverence for these thinkers borders on the worshipful. How is having David Hume as your "Hero Philosopher" much different than revering a saint or a diety? The irony has not been lost on me how many Athiests, Secular Humanists and Evolutionists decry and mock religion yet revere and worship other evolved thinkers and philosophers.

As fallacious and prone to mistakes as human beings have shown themselves to be over the past few milennia, why should one individual finally nail it as to why life exists and why we're here? Re-reading Mr. Wolpert's article, he has some interesting points, but the last half of the article comes across as, "Because I said so."

Another off-putting trait of most Athiests, Secular Humanists, and Evolutionists is the overwhelming sense of smug condascention that comes from most of their statements and interviews, even when trying to affect a casual air.

I agree that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming, and agree with many of it's conclusions. However, this does not necessarily negate my belief in the possibility that events or activites can exist outside of our sphere of comprehension.

You can push the argument of humans as being nothing more than organic matter too far, and end up with Soilent Green and expendable human beings. No thanks.

  • Good Riddance

[Read the article: The stone is cast]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Falwell was little more than a vitrolic hatemonger who spread more negativity than good. When we think of the social nightmare this country has become where reactionary bigotry is the status quo and gay and lesbian individuals are openly derided by our leaders and treated as a political punching bag- we can place a great majority of the blame upon men like Falwell.

It sounds horrible to say, but I'm glad the son of a bitch is dead. My hope is that whomever rises to take his place will be less hate filled (not likely) or, at best, not openly embraced by politicians. Perhaps this new successor will be dismissed altogether as an example of a mindset no longer fitting with our progressing times.

  • Dems Pull Troop Deadline from Iraq Bill

[Read the article: Compromise or compromised?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Our spineless representatives aren't worth a bucket of warm piss.

I didn't vote Democratic in 2006 to get Diet Republican. Why can't they do their jobs, and REPRESENT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE by getting us the hell out of Iraq?

  • The English Language

[Read the article: The president and the peach man]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Good Lord....this is our leader?

I know that he has no command of the English language- we've all known that for a while now- but it still astonishes me every time.
