Very funny.
The LW (and people in general) need to be much less stringent in regard to dating than they seem to be.
For one, a first date is usually very awkward. It's like a job interview. Everyone wants to be presentable, but no one wants to be "too much" of themselves in fear of "scaring" the other person away. So it ends up as a strange kind of dance where you're so afraid of stepping on the other person's toes that you don't really get much dancing done. If you have an instant connection, then I guess it's a different story- and good for you!
I think it takes at least three times getting together with someone (whether as friends or potential partners, etc) before you're really comfortable being yourself. The first time is awkward, the second is still a tiny bit, but by the third time you're comfortable enough sharing time with this person to be yourself.
On a bit of a side note for those of you re-entering the dating world- no person you meet is going to be everything you want them to be right away. I've had many dates where I was rejected out of hand because I couldn't be everything their last boyfriend was within an hour of our meeting. The fact is, it takes time to know anyone that well, so to expect all of that at once is a bit unreasonable. Be patient and you'll often be pleasantly surprised.
AMEN!
Although, living in an image-based society as we are, it is easy to have that misconception.
Conceptual and philosophical insight often comes from people you may never expect, if you are going on appearance alone. The same holds true for artists.
Certainly there are always a few successful artists who have the stereotypical "wacky" appearance and attitude, but most do not. Many artists and hipstery types certainly believe that image alone creates a successful artist, or insightful personality, but in my experience good art is made by relentless hard work, and it's often done in your free time.
For an example regarding image, look up photographs of the Impressionist artists, or Expressionists like Kandinsky. These people were the artistic radicals of their day, and they dressed like bankers.
The writer William S. Burroughs was one of the most radically-minded individuals of the mid to late twentieth century.
Many accounts show him to be socially well-mannered and impeccably dressed.
Thanks for the compliment. Your post was also right on. And "talentless butthole who hates people", man, I died laughing.
What is an issue is the fact that he has made a major flip-flop on most of his previous stances just to cozy up to the GOP.
That reeks of opportunism no matter how you cut it.
"linking the antiabortion movement to abolition and the civil rights movement as social justice endeavors that grew out of religious beliefs."
Too bad that the right's views on gay rights and gay marriage are the new version of Segregation.
What about the American citizens who don't kneel in prayer?
You just going to give them the finger?
This big wet sloppy kiss to the fundie-psychos seems a bit overdone and desperate to me.
will be a wonderful country the day it grows up and pulls its head out of its ass.
Tomorrow is December 8th. Twenty seven years ago a great artist and brilliant member of the human race was gunned down in front of his home, robbing all of us of his humor, insight and love of humanity and desire for peace.
Given this article's theme, I can't help but to mention that if there were better gun control laws in this country that brilliant man, John Lennon, would perhaps still be with us today.
The current of anti-gay bigotry in the right is strong and deep, even if this particular candidate is trying to pass himself off as kindler and gentler, or- as you might say- a "uniter and not a divider".
When did Ms. South Carolina become press secretary?
So how do you propose solving the problem?
Abstinence based sex ed doesn't work.
People are still going to have sexual relationships with same- sex partners.
My sexual orientation isn't going to change because Huckabee thinks poorly of me and my behavior.
So...
Do you support increased research to develop better treatment or a cure for AIDS?
Do you support comprehensive, viable sex education? You know- actually mentioning condoms instead of throwing around thinly veiled religious viewpoints passed off as sex ed?
Come on, you came up with all of the fun statistics. You can think of something.
What's your solution to the problem? One that's based in reality, and not religion? One that attempts to address the complexity of the problem?
Or is it just easier to throw around statistics and rant and rail about how gay people are the root of all evil?
The only way to know what the true facts are would be through an impeachment trial.
Um...
Actually, that's your job.
