  • "I have not seen any time in the past where a president has taken advantage of the presidency to promote his particular faith,"

[Read the article: "A vote for Romney is a vote for Satan"]

Uh...what about the president we have now?

What about the current Republican party? The party that puts the "fun" back into rigid fundamentalist Christian dogma?

The one bright spot is all of these fundamentalist psychos are starting to turn on each other as to whom has the "right idea" or the "correct" version of spiritual belief.

The less centralized they are, the better. The less they can move as a voting bloc, the better for our nation, and the better for the seperation between church and state, which is hanging by a tenuous thread as it is.

  • How did this thread

collapse into a pissing match about who is "Really Christian"?

Shouldn't it concern all of us more about the encroachment of religion into politics? Two things that should be seperate?!?

Isn't that a more relevant topic of conversation?

Or as Mark Williams said (11 PAGES AGO) "this whole kind of affair strike us as literally insane. Religion has next to no public profile here and no role whatsoever in elections. It's all quite scary..."

    My thoughts exactly, Mark.

  • "But, Elder Bush was too worried about not interfering with W's maturation process to do so."

[Read the article: Battle of the Bushes]

Well before the fiasco in Iraq started gaining steam, George W Bush should have matured. It is unacceptable to me and many other Americans that someone like Bush I did not step in to counsel his son, or to offer a strong rebuke.

This hands off approach by Bush I demonstrates to me a great failure in leadership and basic parenting. The office of the President of the United States is not a role one "grows into". It's not a job that you get a feel for as you go. If you are elected President of this nation, you damn well better be able to hold those reigns from the word go. I, and millions of my fellow American citizens, expect it.

The fact that Bush I didn't pull out all of the stops to keep this disaster from happening- when he had direct line to the White House shows either gross ineptitude or indifference, which may suggest he stood to benefit in some way from Gulf War II.

  • Someone please tell me

[Read the article: Robertson for Giuliani, Brownback for McCain]

why politicians continuely court the endorsement of religious leaders who are only a half degree more stable than Jim Jones?

I for one am sick and tired of the slow erasure of the line between church and state.

I ,like JediMaster, would be most interested in a full investigation of the tax exempt status of these individuals and their organizations.

If churches are itching to play politics - as they seem to be- let them ante up and start paying taxes like everyone else.

  • Yellowdog, I agree

[Read the article: How George Bush really found Jesus]

I remember seeing many bumper stickers during my Red State Days which proclaimed, "Christians aren't perfect, they're just forgiven!"

Which I took as, "I can be as much of a jerk as I want, I've got a Get Out of Jail Free card!" The hubris always turned my stomach.

Isn't Pride supposed to be a sin too?

  • This form of Christianity

should come as no surprise to anyone who knows how Americans act and think.

As previous posters have commented, true spiritual growth is a lengthy and difficult process. It's no wonder that the "presto-change-o" brand of Christianity appeals to Americans. It takes no work, no deed, and no major changes in one's life. It's the spiritual and mental equivalent of an impulse buy.

  • Actually

[Read the article: Give Newt a chance]

He has some good ideas. The idea of a prize to motivate the development of a hydrogen engine is a fantastic idea. Once businesses and corporations realize that there's a huge untapped market in green energy, they'll be outdoing each other to bring this technology to fruition. If I remember correcly, Kerry had an idea for an "Apollo Program" to develop green technology.

We have to give corporations and engineering firms a greater motivator beyond simple altruism- talking dollars will get their attention.

I'm no fan of Gingrich's activity in the 90's- but it is important to realize that many Conservatives still look to him and his messages. This is important, as it may make many Conservatives active in the fight against global warming.

Like him, or hate him- when he says liberals can own the debate and ultimately fall behind or lose- he's right.

  • And

The idea of the prize is better than tax incentives, because a working model must be produced before the money is given. You want a billion dollars? Show me the engine! This too would cut down on the slow development and waste of funds as mentioned by a previous poster in regard to DSL bandwidth.

  • Lundeen Doctrine

[Read the article: Jonah Goldberg's deeply "conflicted" thoughts on war and torture]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The problem with "taking a small crappy country and throwing it against the wall" is that in the process of asserting ourselves, thousands of innocent civilians are going to be killed in the process.

That is an unacceptable way for any nation to show its importance. Better that we should forge strong diplomatic relationships and show our abilities through stewardship, commerce and resources- assisting third world nations and peacefully strengthening our existing alliances.

We as a nation have apparently lost our ability for empathy when speakers, pundits and politicians can so casually throw around the idea of punitive military action against a non-agressive country. Not to mention our unbelievable "debate" about torture. What if the shoe were on the other foot? What if the EU thought that we American's needed to be "thrown against the wall" and taught a lesson?

The fact that Jonah Goldberg can so gleefully and unabashedly cream himself over such a revolting idea as the one put forth by Lundeen turns my stomach and makes me wonder if Goldberg has a shred of humanity left in him.
