Ever since 1980

when the Reagan Democrats voted against their own economic interests because he promised to defeat the unions, ERA, and everything progressive, the idea that New Deal Democrats can win back America, esp. the South, should've been discarded. Just like insects can be infected and made to climb up plant stalks and mice running around cats, humans can be infected by religious thoughts to sacrifice one's own interests. That's what we have here and until and unless these people can be made to see the truth, and learn to genuinely respect fellow human beings regardless of gender, religion, etc, the South will be lost to the Democrats. It was the Silent Majority that revolted against Democrats, and it will be they that bring down the country.

Is someone still calling Obama progressive?

FISA, late-term abortions, faith initiatives, and a few others I've forgotten... Yeah, you must have been in a coma, too.

(Here's the apparently disliked Greenwald on a few of the things you missed.

Yeah, shoot the messenger. This is why we're in such a mess.)

The cartoon inadvertently exposed Obama's problem. Deal with it.

Sad, though not surprised

Same thing happened at, say, 2000 GOP Convention in Philly and 2004 in NYC. I'm sure it's happened elsewhere, too. I mean, just try handing out some incriminating leaflets on a NY sidewalk during a corporate event. Police will come and tell you to go in a pen. I know, because I have.

We have people complaining about "communist China" and how they didn't allow protests at, say, the Olympics. We're right about there.

Where the hell was the anger?

Alright, I didn't watch everything. But I listened the Michelle, the Clintons, and Biden. And the only people I'm angry at is the Democrats.

What's with the creationist bashing?

You people are stupid. 40% of Americans believe in the infallible words of the Bible and reject evolution completely (not that they really understand it, but that's another matter). I think well under 20% also reject intelligent design and consider evolution the ONLY explanation for the diversity of life.

You have no idea how backward this country is. You will be devastated to find out.

bernbart

Please reread my post. I'm not debating creationism v. evolution. Creationism and ID are the same junk. What I'm saying is 40 of Americans are strict creationists, and 40+% more support ID in some form. So I'm just pouring cold water on those people gloating about a creationist on the ticket. They must have missed the GOP debate where the candidates raised their hands to swear on the infallible words of the Bible.

That's the country we have.

My facebook friends are madly quoting from Palin

They think the quotes are self-evidently ridiculous, yet it only proves how good soundbites they are, and what a dismal failure the DNC Convention has been in comparison, because no one was quoting from Biden or even Obama. To the small circle of social activists, the remarks may have been way off the mark. To mainstream America, they go right to the point.

As much as I abhor opinion polls, they are here, so let's look at them.

"Last night’s polling shows that, by a ten-to-one margin, voters believe reporters are trying to hurt Palin’s campaign rather than help. Republicans and unaffiliated voters strongly believe that a double standard is being applied to Palin because she is a woman. Democrats disagree. Perhaps most stunning is that, among unaffiliated voters, just 42% believe Obama has better experience than Palin to be President. Thirty-seven percent (37%) say Palin has the edge on experience. Again, most of the interviews for this survey were completed before Palin’s well-received speech last night." (Rasmussen, 9/4/08)

No, because it was understood. It is not even accepted today.

Wow

Thanks Glenn for darkening my morning. I love these exposes that no one else seems to care about.

It's time to stop making excuses

Even if Obama wishes to avoid the stereotype, it explains nothing about the absence of Biden or attacks on Republicans from his surrogates. He did a great job of using sidekicks in the primary, but they have all but disappeared.

I'm really amazed by the self-justification among Obama supporters. My message, which has yet to get across, is to realize the campaign's stuck partly due to its own fault. It's time to shape up or get brushed aside by the amoral conservative machine.

@tiberius: No, some of you do think the world's coming to an end

Like Sarah Palin and her church. They call this the end-times.

And your post was so chock-full of negativity your assertion about positiveness went begging.

Re: America is becoming a parody of itself.

As much as I agree with your general sentiments, I have to point out how wrong you are: we have been a superpower since only WWII, when the rest of the world was destroyed. But ignorance, greed, and a self-importance supported by religions manages to bring it down to earth with barely half a century. Well done, my God-fearing Americans. Perhaps you should pay a little less attention to the afterlife and more to this present we can be certain of.

There are some good points

While some colleges hand out generous packages, not all of them have big endowments. Besides, they often receive generous compensations from federal and state governments, which may more than even things out.

In other countries, where basic, universal education actually prepares graduates for decent jobs, people don't have to go to college to learn what they should've gotten in high school, or earlier. Remedial reading and math classes in college, while necessary, are symptoms of a broken system that fails kids from the get-go.

Parents have to take responsibility, too. When so many districts have drop-out rates over 50%, how can they sleep at night?

We're a country on the decline, and no amount of H1-Bs or whatever are going to reverse that.
