How Salon Letters to the Editor works

At the end of every article Salon has published since we started this feature in October, 2005, you'll find a button that reads "Post a Letter About This Article." Clicking on that button takes you to a form you can use to submit your letter. (If you wish to send the editors of Salon a letter that is not for publication, you can do it from this page instead.) Letters are limited to 1000 words in length.

Your letter will be posted to Salon when you hit the "Publish my letter" button. All letters become the property of Salon Media Group, Inc. once you press the "Publish my letter" button. (For more information on terms and conditions, see Salon's Terms of Service).

About Letters registration

Salon now requires all users who wish to post Letters to the Editor to open an account. Salon Premium members are already considered to have accounts. Non-Premium members need to create an account by choosing a username and password and providing us with a working e-mail address.

Why does Salon want my e-mail address?

If a problem or question arises about your letter, your e-mail address will help us resolve it. Occasionally, a Salon writer or editor may wish to reply privately to a letter to the editor. Salon will not publish your e-mail address, nor will we ever trade or resell your address.

Offensive Letters

Salon allows registered letter writers to flag other letters that are offensive by clicking on the flag icon at the end of every letter. Salon will review the reader-flagged letters, and reserves the right to delete any letter at its discretion. We may remove letters that are off-topic, crude or vulgar, are of low quality or that violate the law or common decency. We do not allow HTML links within the body of the letter, and we will not tolerate link spam, links to phishing sites, sites promoting illegal activity, etc.

Perpetuity

Letters may remain on Salon's site in perpetuity.

Blocking participants

Letter writers who consistently have their letters removed for the reasons cited above, or have otherwise proven to be a general nuisance, will have their accounts blocked, and will be unable to post letters.

Closed threads

Most Letters threads will be closed after a two-day period.
