@MJMC

I truly and unashamedly want some politically fatal dirt to come to light, so we can be done with this Alaskan Alex Forrest. This woman is dangerously unqualified, by both experience and intellect, to be a national executive political candidate. The accrued evidence is by now beyond dispositive. That resignation news conference was surreal.

Well, you "call an audible."

"2012 Red Right!!!, 2012 Red Right!!!, hut, hut, hut..."

Ahhhh....just as Bush had Mexed Missages, the STAR BASKETBALL PLAYER gives us wonderfully Mexed Mitaphors.

Face it, this chick is a Zero.

The Alex Forrest

of the Repu'ublicist Party. They richly deserve her.

The latest side-splitter

Palin's lawyer is reportedly threatening lawsuits aimed at Alaskan bloggers, HuffPo, MSNBC, and the NY Times etc for "spreading defamatory rumors" about her reason for resigning. Yeah, dipwad, go right ahead, you bet'cha, make yourselves look even more whiny foolish -- though, at this point, that may not be possible.

I am all over this issue

See my last two blog posts. Link in my name.

"...Assume for the moment -- just for the sake of argument -- that the best we might manage is the status quo in our annual ~$2 trillion "health care" outlay (alternatively and more stably stated as ~16% of GDP). Assume further that the goals of improved quality and universal access might be effected within that budgetary constraint. You then have the circumstance of the "Zero-Sum Game" within which the aggregate allocation is necessarily re-apportioned.

It should be immediately obvious that the multimillionaire CEOs of our major for-profit "health care industry" players are not about to sit idly by and see their respective slices of the pie diminished. Hence the intense lobbying now underway to delve out smaller slices elsewhere, e.g., by legislative tactics such as [1] raising the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 70 or higher, [2] decreasing yet again Medicare payments to doctors and hospitals, [3] requiring that everyone buy private insurance, and [4] taxing employer-provided benefits. See (3)(D) above. Take the glaring hint..."

@massacio

"...models based on something like the Gaussian Copula, which were very complicated..."

___

I beg to differ. I have Li's paper. I found it simplistic, naive (and I was right). As did many other Wall Street quants with way more chops than mine (I used to work in subprime risk modeling & mgmt).

Asian math cat with a PhD, what's not to love? Particularly if you're some Investment Bank Suit who doesn't know shit about math. You don't want to appear like you're some naif. It smacks of "Shopping for Friendly Jurors," a common problem in applied stats. The Suits will always go with the flow and sign off on some B.S. methodology that looks like it points toward low-risk profitability.

In general, any time I see the name "Gauss" invoked regarding something having to do with modeling some non-physical property, my hand moves reflexively over my wallet.

If you're interested,

I've written extensively on the health care policy reform issue lately. See my latest two posts. Link in my name.

My conclusion, following Guiness Book candidate detail in one of the posts:

"I have to admit at this point to a net leaning toward the Single Payer concept, potential warts and all. I do not see that happening anytime soon, however -- certainly not this year. We seem to be headed toward an inscrutably hyper-complex re-jiggering of our no-value-adding "health care" paper-pushing industry. I hope I'm wrong."

Maybe we should re-name our national acronym

to the "USF" -- the United States of Fakery.

I get sick of it -- the 24/7 frauds. Nowadays my TV is most recently awash with bullshit ads for "mortgage modifications," among the myriad other breathless scams.

The USF - fake hair, fake nails, fake lips, fake tits, fake memoirs, fake GOP marriages, fake Alcohol and Addiction Cures, fake FOREX Made Easy, fake Work-at-Home-2-hrs-a-Week-and-Get-Rich schemes, fake Jeff's-EZ-Real-Estate-Riches-Method, fake Weight-Loss-panaceas, fake reverse mortgages...

Dangerously fake Presidential material from Alaska.

Sick of it.

"Looking sharp in their dress blue uniforms"

Says it all. They were obvious props for an obvious lame GOP stunt that predictably fizzled.

@Kattty9

Yeah. I've been studying this issue for 15 years now. See my blog. Link in my name. The handsomely paid execs of Big Insurance and Big Rx are not about to let their extremely lucrative enterprises be trifled with. Their congressional servants will, of course, do their part to ensure the de facto status quo.

Monday, July 20, 2009 11:48 AM

The GOP is making no secret of the fact

that casting Obama as a major "failure" ASAP is much more important than the ongoing bankrupting cost of medical care. The ever-worsening unemployment situation is helping drive his JAR down, and if they can successfully obstruct health care reform, they think they're on their way to regaining power, that the bloom will come off the Obama rose.
