Ya gotta love it

The enduring apology for the gazillion-dollar compensation and bonus packages, i.e., "we simply must be able to attract and retain the best talent..."

LOL. Right, I mean, look how well it's worked out to date.

BTW, I invite anyone to my "Tranche Warfare" blog post (link in my signature).

Bring in the VC's

I just posted one stimulous/recovery idea. Dunno, just an idea. Link in my name.

Is there a possible 3rd way?

Dunno. Just posted some thoughts about it. Click my name.

Remember, The Median is not the Message

Look it up.

Well, for those of you too lazy:

http://www.cancerguide.org/median_not_msg.html

My daughter was diagnosed with terminal hepatic cancer in 1996. They gave her 3-6 weeks (she presented at stage IVb, as serious as it gets).

She lived 26 months. Fought like hell, bravely and with tremendous dignity. Her length of survival was a decided statistical "outlier."

If they got Justice Ginsberg's tumor with good margins and no evidence of mets cells, she may well survive quite a while.

What now?

That is the only salient question. I've proffered one idea. Link in my name.

We gotta get moving. Smartly. This ad nauseum retrospective political finger-pointing isn't gonna pay anyone's bills.

They will have to come back for more

I doubt that this will suffice. They will have to come back from more stimulus/recovery legislation. Probably fairly soon. Maybe there’s a role for the venture capital industry as one part of the mix.

40 flights a day

from the L.A. area to Vegas by Southwest alone (LAX, Burbank, Ontario, and Orange County airports). Then there are also the other carriers. Airlines don't want a, LA - LAS MagLev train competitor. The flights may only be 50 minutes, but all the other time-consuming air travel pre- and post-flight BS makes it likely that a MagLev could get you to the gaming tables quicker.

Original article: Watching Republicans grieve

Very interesting article

President Obama certainly has his work cut out for him, especially in light of the additional racism and tin-foil-hat idiocy he has to surmount.

BTW, must-see TV this Tuesday on PBS "Frontline" -- "Inside the Meltdown."

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meltdown/

I've been writing a lot about this mess on my blog. Really interested in seeing this. We are dangerously close to a total economic collapse.

Original article: Your DNA is a snitch

There are currently no federal quality standards

for DNA lab work. So, if some commercial lab analyzes your genetic code -- say in a paternity dispute -- you have no independent way to know how accurate their work is. Analytical lab quality in general varies wildly. I worked for more than 5 years in a forensic level environmental radiation lab (where a lot of our samples were done for litigation support regarding contamination and exposure episodes). We had Frye Standard training from day one.

You'll hear all this blather about how "accurate" DNA testing is. Don't believe it, absent compelling QA evidence.

@Fallonius

Yeah, see Gladwell's "The Moral Hazard Myth" (New Yorker, Google it). Health care coverage is properly ethically viewed as "social insurance" rather than the current mode of "actuarial based insurance." The latter will become problematic once we can accurately diagnose and predict everyone's latent maladies; there'll be no one left to cherry-pick for underwriting.

Health care as social insurance, adroitly administered, would be significantly cheaper as well.

Last time I checked,

neither al Qaeda nor the Taliban had [1] an air force, [2] a navy, [3] artillery and missile battalions, or [4] heavy armor mechanized units. Yet they manage to stymie our half-trillion dollar annual budget military. Tough little asymmetrical warfare MoFos, who eagerly await our new boots-on-the-ground arrivals. I read a taunting quote recently in which one Taliban commander reportedly said "the Americans will be easy, compared to the Russians."

Read Steve Coll's seminal "Ghost Wars."

If Michelle Malkin

utters yet another utterly predictable inanity, and no one reports on it, does she truly exist? Same question regarding Hannity, Bill-O, Limbaugh, Coulter, and Sarah Palin et al.

CitiSuck

I have a Citi Mastercard. $379 current balance on a $10k line. I'm never late. My FICO is in the 800 range. Nonetheless, they just sent me an insulting "Change In Terms" letter apprising me that they were raising my APR to 17%.

Fine, you morons have just cost yourselves the APR differential in business, and I will go into full-bore "deadbeat" mode (what the banks call people who pay off in full and on time every month). I won't get pissed and close the account, I'll just make you continue to carry me on your books as a "transactor," which will have the additional salutary effect of lowering my aggregate UTIL (my total credit balances divided by total lines).

I will not help bail these idiots out.

Sub seabed disposal

An idea that has merit, but got summarily spiked. They let it get spun as "ocean dumping" when that was not what was envisioned. The Greenies don't want a safe solution, they want the waste to remain in our faces, to help kill nuke power.

I think I'm gonna legally change my middle name

from "Eugene" to "Hussein" just 'cause.

Had to love it the other day when Alan Keyes said that Obama is "an extremely dangerous Marxist."

These dopes are all pretty entertaining.
