Original article: Fashion still hates "fat"

@ JamesLeask

Are you Beth Ditto's doctor, or the doctor of any of the "underweight" models to whom you refer? If not, you have no knowledge of their health or propensity to a coronary, and would be best served by refraining from comment.

Polanski apologist

I am sure it is an excellent movie. But since Ethan Coen has apparently signed the pro-Polanski petition that is floating around Hollywood, I will not be spending my money on going to see it.

What about Clint Eastwood?

His latest, Invictus, should be out in time for the Oscars. And it's got Morgan Freeman playing Nelson Mandela. Unless Matt Damon's South African accent is even worse than I think it's going to be (and that's pretty bad), how can it not be a lock for a nomination at least?

This movie is funny as all hell

Go see this movie! I saw it when it came out in the UK and it is hilarious. You miss half the lines because you are laughing too hard at the previous line. It is deeply cynical and bitterly, mordantly funny.

Re: Women and children first

I am sure that there will be much debate on various blogs about this, but I think it probably wasn't that complicated. When the plane landed on the water and people realized that there was an opportunity to exit, someone said "Women and children first."

I don't imagine that anyone wanted to argue and waste time debating the point, so that is what they did. I really don't think anyone's thought processes were dealing with the feminist implications of the statement, but instead thinking about just getting off the plane as quickly as possible.

London NFL game

Like most sensible people travelling to Wembley from central London, we will take the train. 15 minutes from London Marylebone. It would take at least 90 minutes in a car, and there is nowhere to park. Welcome to a sensible transport policy.

Original article: Correction on Sarah Palin

Unbelievable

She has no knowledge, judgment or, frankly, independent thought. She is not qualified to be Manhattan Borough President (not remotely), let alone Vice President of the United States.

Every election I think that this time will be different. This time the American people will choose the responsible alternative. And each time they choose the person with whom they would like to have a beer. The person who is a "good guy" and they know this "in their hearts."

This time, we are staring into the abyss. If I were a Democratic partisan, I would want Obama to lose this election, because there is no quick fix coming out of this morass. There will be no money for health care, war with Iran, or anything else.

This time, I actually hope that my lack of faith in the American people will be justified.

Well, I have seen it

As I live in the UK, where it opened last week. And Stephanie is probably right about its objective merits.

That said, however, it was the most fun I've had at the movies in a long, long time. People were dancing in the aisles at the end. Could it have been better? Probably. But it was the first time in a long time I've left a cinema feeling happier about life than when I went in.

Writers are not speakers

I've read some pieces by these two that are interesting and articulate. But they clearly have no speaking skills at all, as they come across as vapid, inarticulate morons. And getting drunk before a public appearance is not professional.

Stick to writing, ladies.

Nice one

Responding to the very first comment: we'll take our economy, thanks. London is rapidly displacing New York as the centre of global financial capital, and the U.S. economy is sinking into a subprime morass. When it costs you US$1.04 to buy a Canadian dollar, you really ought not throw stones.

And JK Rowling created these characters; she can say anything she wants about them. Whether you choose to have her statements fit into your personal Harry Potter universe or not is up to you.

LHR

Yeah, Heathrow isn't so bad. And if you travel in business or first class there is a fast track security queue and a fast track immigration queue for non-EU citizens (if the US did this, I would go there a lot more).

But if you're flying within Europe, 99% of the time it is better to fly from City airport. Tiny and crowded with businessmen with overly developed senses of entitlement, but you can rock up half an hour before your flight if you have to.

Not so much

The admissions process for Oxford and Cambridge has always been biased in one way or another. In Laurie's day they were biased in favour of public schools (U.S.=private); now, it is difficult for public school students to get a look-in. And it is now much easier for overseas students to be admitted than EU students, because overseas students pay far higher tuition rates.

On the article itself, I like puff pieces if they have a point to make or are amusing, but this was neither.

Miami is OK...

...if you are an American. If you are not, be prepared for an agonizing wait in the immigration "queue" (more like a herd) as you miss your connecting flight to the Caribbean.

I don't care how much cheaper it is to buy that AA ticket, if you are going from Europe to the Caribbean, do NOT fly through Miami.

Also, the immigration queues at Newark for foreigners are infinitely better than those at JFK.
