It's time for U.S. generals and other top-level military personnel to show their patriotism and start resigning in protest of the Bush regime's imperialism. Eight or ten generals and a couple of admirals would make people wake up and take notice - maybe even some Democratic Congressmembers.
If Colin Powell and a few others at the State Department had walked, loudly, in 2003, we might not be where we are today.
...is what effect would withdrawal have on the U.S. economy? To what extent is Iraq spending propping up the part of the economy that China is not? Is there significant incentive for Democrats and moderate Republicans to keep the war going for the next year to keep people in their districts employed so that "It's the economy, stupid!" doesn't kick into play for 2008?
I'd like to see a thorough economic analysis of the impacts of the Iraq invasion and occupation. Can anyone point me to one?
I can take much more.
And you moved TOWARDS DC, Tim?
The Dems should mimic the Repugs by labeling the Bush regime's plans themselves, instead of letting them get away with the word "Success."
This is "Stay the Course" and the Dems should drive that home.
As an Alaskan, I'm starting to feel a sense of real desperation about this - walruses, polar bears, and whales will be devastated by global warming. Sockeye salmon, essential to the food chain, are affected by as much as 1/4 of a degree in water temperature and will change their range and likely their spawning habits. We have whole communities in desperate need of relocating because storm surges, in combination with the loss of fast ice buffering the shoreline, are literally plucking buildings off the coast. Melting permafrost contributes to warming as methane gas is released, and the State of Alaska is facing a potential $10 billion in costs in just the next couple of decades to cope with the effects on public buildings.
It would be easy to joke that the villagers can go take jobs on all of Fox News' new oil rigs, but the effects are beyond tragic. Especially for the nonhumans who have no control and little recourse.
Why do we always have to have a Love Canal before we pay attention?
Salon and other online news sources make it easier to follow what's happening in White House "press briefings" - as does Jon Stewart. I can't say that I remember much about even Bill Clinton's White House information dissemination.
Scott McClellan stonewalled, but he seemed far more respectful of the media and the public than these past two press secretaries. I have found the combative styles of Tony Snow and Dana Perino very distasteful. The verbal ping-pong, insults, and downright nastiness are as demeaning of the public interest as they are to reporters. Perino sounds like a spoiled teen with a too-ready mouth.
But they won't dump her and she won't go on her own. Icompetence is a requisite trait for this White House.
How interesting that you talk about "all" the spouses in your title, but fail to include Bill Clinton in your graphic. Salon has consistently promoted Hillary Clinton as the next president, but you leave out Bill in this visual. I'll admit that I haven't read the article - I've tuned out to the next election. I am an independent who has never missed an election in 30+ years of eligibility to vote, but I see no qualitative difference in the Republican and Democratic parties at present - the Democrats have proved to be scattered and totally inept and I'm looking for a progressive third party to emerge to rescue this nation, if not in 2008, down the line when the rest of the nation has finally had enough of just plain bad government.
this article doing on Salon??????
Electing Democrats "to do the job" in foreign policy and defense is effectively the same as electing Republicans. Even if the Dems are overwhelmingly elected to office in 2008, they will cave, over and over, to the Republicans lest they be painted as too soft on security and (fill in the blanks), in order to hang onto power.
The U.S. will be nowhere better than it is now!!!!!
Is it too late for a presidential candidate with vision and integrity, beholden to no party, to step forward and lead the nation to an honest and better place? I don't think so, but it needs to come soon.
