I was on law review (not at Harvard) when I was a law student. Many people totally misunderstand what law reviews are and what students on law review actually do. A law review contains articles by recognized experts in various fields of law: practicing lawyers, law professors, judges, etc., not by law students.
(I suppose you could have a once-in-a-lifetime mega, super genius student publish a law review article but, really, it doesn't happen. Or, I suppose there may be law reviews out there that publish student work, I am not aware of any.)
So what do students on law review do? Edit and cite-check the articles submitted by legal experts for publication. What to Presidents or Executive Editors of law reviews do. Probably varies from journal to journal but, generally, they (in conjunction with other law review members and law school professors) decide which articles will or will not be published, they work with the Managing Editor to assign responsibility for editing and cite-checking the articles. They supervise and review the work of the lower level editors. The buck stops with the law review President or Executive Editor - he or she is ultimately responsible for the quality of what appears in each law review. Being President of Harvard Law Review is huge. Every legal expert and his aunt or uncle would kill to be published there. Bottom line: law students (which is what Obama was when he was President of Harvard Law Review) do not write articles for law reviews."
And there are thousands of Iraq war veterans who are simply not getting the treatment they need for serious physical and mental conditions. These Iraq war veterans are not finding jobs, they are not being trained, they and their families are sinking into proverty, they develop substance abuse problems and, yes, they are homeless. It is a crime that, 30+ years afer Vietnam there are still Vietnam veterans on the streets. Will we compound this crime by repeating the same mistakes with our Iraq war veterans. "Support Our Troops" "Honor Their Service"what a bunch of bullshit. I want to spit on every person who mouths these mindless platitudes, yet, refuses to recognize the real despair in which so many of our Iraq vets find themselves. Sarah Palin has no foreign policy experiences, she admits she hasn't really thought about the Iraq war. With a son in Iraq how can she have ignored this issue? How will she "support and honor" her son's service? With platitudes? Or with genuine compassions and action?
Is there really anything else to be said?
Watching "Lost" is like actively reading 19th centruy novels like "Our Mutual Friend," "Bleak House," Middlemarch" to name a few. These books are complex: chock full of characters, multiple plots, and questions, questions, questions. The writers give the readers just enough information but no more, this requires the reader to actively engage with the characters, to follow the plots and to wrestle with the questions in the context of the world the author creates. Long after reading these books I find myself thinking about the books, about the characters and asking questions. And, often I come with new answers, with new insight into the book. A real world situation often prompts me to think about what I have discovered in these books:
What would Dorothea Brooke do? Would she do the same thing at the beginning of the story as she would at the end? No.
What would Rosamond Vincy do? Same thing at beginning as at end? Probably
What would Bella Wilfer do? Same thing at beginning as at end? No.
What would Mrs. Podsnap do? Same that at beginning as at end? Yes
What would Esther Summerson do? The answer would be different at the end of her story than at the beginning.
What would Mrs. Pardiggle do? She is always the same
(I've often wondered if "Lost" is a nod to "Paradise Lost"?)
"Twin Peaks." Sheesh, did that one implode or what?
Absolutely, I agree with you. "Twin Peaks" had nowhere to go after Laura Palmer. It was a brilliant show and David Lynch should have been allowed to take it where he wanted to go and at his own pace. Ditto Lost. They'd lose me if they rush to reveal answers. Keep the brainfood coming!!
