Polls schmolls

[Lovely post from matestgo: calling Nancy Pelosi the "c" word; your parents must be so proud]

Obama is not losing in the polls. Zogby is not the only pollster. Average of several polls released this week show basically a statistical tie. Zogby's was the only poll that had McCain with a 5% lead and there was another poll with Obama 5% ahead. (Source: www.electoral-vote.com) At this stage of the game polls are pretty irrelevant.

I never thought that this would be anything other than a close race. Many people are just getting to know Obama and he is reaching out to people who are traditionally ignored. This week he was in Southside Virginia (an area that's been hit hard by the poor economy and has been loosing jobs). He spoke to a mostly white crowd and his words very effectively showed that he understood their lives and he told them what steps he would take to help (e.g., tax breaks for companies that keep or create jobs in U.S. and take away tax breaks for companies that ship them overseas). By the way, no presidential candidate has visited Southside since 1955 when Ike visited!

@mateostgo

You seem like such a lovely person but, sorry, you are undoubtedly a Republican. Just because you say it over and over and over again doesn't make it true. On these threads we all hide behind the anonymity of our screen names. How much do you get for each of these posts (btw, they might be more effective if you dropped the nasty language)? Do you make up these posts yourself or do they feed you talking points?

I would respect your opinion so much more if you were honest about who you are and why you want John McCain to be President. Even Corsi did not publish anonymously and flat out admitted that he wrote his book to help elect McCain.

@NYdem08

I am not a "volatile progressive, college kid [or] first time voter... [I am] the BACKBONE of th[e] party." I am a 51 year old woman who voted in her first Presidential election in 1976. And I consider myself just slightly left of center (and the Obama supporters that I know would describe themselves as such). I was also very active in Democratic politics in my late teens in early twenties. It is becaue of the Clintons that I have been completely turned off by the Democrats. Yes, I voted for Bill twice, voted for Gore and voted for Kerry. This year I have been more active then I was even when I was much younger plus I have a lot more money so I've also been able to make a meaningful $ contribution. It is time to fix the Democratics party - kick out hacks like the Clinton's and their cronies.

@NYDem08

Democracy issues: MI and FL was a huge issue for us. Four other states also moved up their primaries: NV, IA, SC and NH. None of these states were penalized as Obama was expected to win them all. MI and FL where Clinton polled to win were set to be penalized.

The above statement is inaccurate. All the primaries listed above had been moved by August 2007. (SEE: New York Times Election 2008 Guide, August 22, 2007.) Clinton was well ahead of Obama for most of 2007 both nationally and state-by-state.

SUMMER 2007 POLLS RESULTS FOR IOWA, NEVADA, NEW HAMPSHIRE AND SOUTH CAROLINA

August 18, Zogby poll (Iowa): Clinton 30% ; Obama 19%

August 16, Research 2000 poll (Nevada): Clinton 39%; Obama 19%

September 26, Zogby poll (New Hampshire): Clinton 38%; Obama 23%

September 27, Rasmussen (South Carolina): Clinton 43%; Obama 30%

Source: electoral-vote.com

It is not true that the above states were not penalized because Obama was projected to win them. At the time Florida was penalized (August 2007), Clinton was well ahead in IA, NV, NH and SC. At the time Michigan was penalized (December 2007), Clinton was still well ahead in these states. (See: Pew Poll results, below.)

The DNC imposed sanctions on Florida in August 2007. (Source: Washington Post, August 26, 2007.) The DNC imposed sanctions on Michigan in December. (Source: Washington Post, December 2, 2007.) In December 2007 Reuters/Zogby poll showed that, nationally, Clinton led Obama 40% to 32%. On December 2, 2007 the Pew Research Center released the following poll results:

Iowa: Clinton 31%; Obama 26%

New Hampshire: Clinton 38%; Obama 19%

South Carolina: Clinton 45%; Obama 31%

(There was no data on Nevada.)
