Possibilities
[Read the article: A day for celebration, but the war awaits]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I have enjoyed the lead-up to today's changing of the guard. Charlie Rangel giving Cheney the boot from his office near the House chamber. Pelosi ignoring the GOP's request for the minority party "Bill of Rights" they ignored when she requested it 3 years ago. GOP whining about not being consulted by the new Democratic majority as if they ever consulted even the moderates in their own party. Bush trying to make it sound like the public actually supports him. Bush wanting to read your snail mail as well as your email and tap your phone and send you to some country where you can be tortured. In just six years we have gone from being the only superpower to the world's biggest banana republic.
You mentioned that withholding funding for the war is dangerous politically. Yup, it is. But the political danger can't hold a candle to the certainty that 2,500 more Americans will die over the next two years in Iraq unless we get them the hell out of there.
If withholding the money for the war is unpalatable, how about impeachment? The president refuses to abide by the will of the people, the Congress, and the courts. He is stealing our civil liberties; has started an illegal, unnecessary and heinous war; has incited religious and tribal hatred amongst the 25 million people of Iraq; has killed tens if not hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians; and tortured and maimed thousands more. Don't forget the 200 people killed in Bali, the 200 in Madrid and the 52 in London. They belong on his ledger, too. He is bankrupting the nation. He is destroying federal agencies one by one (FEMA, CIA, EPA, FDA, HHS, etc.).
I propose impeachment for Bush and removal from office for the good of the nation. Cheney? Impeachment and removal from office for being pure evil. Nancy Pelosi can be the first woman president in addition to being the first woman speaker of the House.
She can tell the Iraqis we are leaving no later than January 1, 2008. Iraqis have one year to get their act together (partition and sharing oil revenues seems to the best temporary solution). If they do work things out, great. If they don't, 'tis a pity. But in either case, bye.

Since 1999
[Read the article: A question of timing]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I remember the first time I saw Shrub amid the early noise about his running for president. It was an interview he gave in September 1999. I saw the beady eyes, the smirk, the fratboy attitude, the vapid responses to questions and the inability to speak coherently for more than six consecutive words. "Nobody's gonna vote for THIS guy, are they?," I asked myself. I am still asking, "Nobody's gonna believe this guy, are they?"
ABC News is reporting that advance units in the latest escalation are already arriving in Baghdad. This is why he wanted the extra time between the election and now, to get some of the forces there. This makes it much harder for Congress to stop the surge. They're already there.
When does a president cross the line from commander-in-chief to dictator? Lincoln became a de facto dictator even though he always sought Congressional approval for actions he had alraedy taken. Nixon crossed the line when he had the CIA stall the FBI's investigation into Watergate, had the plumbers break into offices and homes and used the IRS to punish his critics. Bush crossed the line when he authorized torture, illegal wiretaps and detaining people without counsel or redress indefinitely. Do people care? Is our republic so far gone that for the sake of illusory safety people will allow this imbecile and his right wing handlers to steal our nation?
The Democrats should forget about trying to stop the surge and just move onto impeachment proceedings now. The constitutional crisis is already upon us. Let's get to it.

Decisive ideological struggle?
[Read the article: The emperor's new way forward]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If this is the decisive ideological struggle of our time as the Imbecile-in-Chief keeps chanting, then why don't we cancel the tax cuts, revive the draft and gear up for the fight? Reports say we don't even have enough vehicles in Iraq for the 20,000 men who are already arriving. I hope they brought enough body bags.
When the Cold War began we gave, not lent, GAVE $15 billion (in 1947 dollars) to Europe as seed money for rebuilding and we kept the draft from WW2 which came in handy for the wars in Korea and Vietnam. Surely saving our civilization from Islamic fundamentalism must be worth a few bucks to the top 1% who own almost everything ... right?
The naked I-in-C knows Iraq is lost but he's in "not on my watch" mode. Let Hillary, Barack or Mitt deal with the disaster of watching our guys fleeing from Baghdad rooftops. Let the children of the poor and middle class die with honor, not the children of the 1%.
The I-in-C is a cynical bastard.
