What W Sees
[Read the article: Maybe they just need to "turn the corner"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Take a minute to put on your special Karl Rove designer spectacles and see what W sees:
A poor, predominantly African-American city that is now a predominantly white, smaller city and soon will be even whiter when real estate developers buy out the few remaining blacks with empty lots. Luxury homes, co-ops and condos to follow. Thanks to the insurance companies for dragging their feet paying off claims. "Here's your check. Too bad the housing market collapsed. Keep the trailer as FEMA's going away gift. I-10 is that way."
Southeastern Louisiana will now be a red zone in a purple state. Katrina (and Rove) drove out 200,000 mostly black, mostly Democratic, voters to other red states. This diaspora of African-American voters will help Republican candidates in state-wide elections.
The casinos are back on the Gulf shore. The $4 billion aimed at wealthy Katrina victims helped them recover sooner than the poor victims who are still fighting for their federal aid. Shout out to Governor Haley Barbour! Who dat?!
W is not delusional. Everything is going according to plan. The Chinese character for chaos is a mix of the characters for confusion and opportunity. Bush, Rove and company saw opportunity in Katrina's destructive power and took advantage of it.
Bush once said, "Some call you the super rich. I call you 'my base.'" People still think W is visiting the poor and homeless in New Orleans and the Gulf coast. He's actually visiting his prospering base.
Sweet.

Senator Craig, Your Bus is Here
[Read the article: Craig: No love from the president]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]No, no, senator, not on, under.
Poor Larry. He represents a state so red there's no point in saving him. If Idaho were a purple state with any chance that a Democrat might win Larry's seat in 2008, Bush and the other Republicans would be rushing to his defense. But, gee, Larry we can replace you with any one of a dozen other rednecks. Maybe someone with a sexual fetish that IS acceptable to more people, like feet or shoes or ... women.
C'mon, Larry, get under the bus. We're burning fuel. Global warming, y'know.
-
Why?
[Read the article: Larry Craig's "intent" to deceive]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Why:
- Did Idahoans elect Larry in the first place? He seems dumber than dirt.
- Did Larry appear in court in Minnesota without his attorney?
- Doesn't a US Senator understand that a plea deal is binding unless there is compelling evidence to suggest he didn't know what he was doing?
- Would Larry intentionally tell us and show us he doesn't know what he is doing?
- Do I suspect that Larry never gave any issue this much thought when he voted against gay rights, healthcare for children or approving Bush's war?
- Does this story just seem sad and not at all entertaining?
- Do we always have to have these sleazy scandals when important issues need our attention (war, healthcare, environment)?
- (to briefly change the topic) am I suspicious of the Germans announcing a foiled plot just before Petraeus' report is due?
- Doesn't Larry just go home?

Bush, bin Laden
[Read the article: Losing bin Laden]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Bush can't find bin Laden? Why is anyone surprised? Look at today's events. A needless spat with the South Koreans. Austrians instead of Australians. OPEC instead of APEC. And Bush can't find exit, stage right.
I don't think Bush uses bin Laden to scare us because all that does is remind us he hasn't caught him yet. Bush uses Al Qaida as the bogeyman when he needs a quick scare. The arrests of 3 guys in Germany looks more like a Bush "be scared!" moment than this latest tape.
The tape is a September 11 valentine from OBL or his followers. The Just for Men™ beard coloring looks great. By using references to recent events he's sticking it to W, not so much us.
I have always believed Bush made a deal with the bin Laden family. The Bush family has many dealings with the bin Ladens through their respective construction companies (Bechtel, the Carlyle Group, and bin Laden Construction). In the days after September 11, members of prominent Saudi families, including the bin Ladens, were allowed to fly when all other planes were grounded, and leave the US without questioning by federal agents. Even though 14 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals, Bush & Co. has gone out of its way to protect the Saudis from any criticism for their role in financing Wahhabism, the radical version of Islam, in the Middle East. The deal with the bin Ladens is in exchange for no more attacks on US soil during the Bush presidency there will no serious attempts to kill or capture OBL.
OBL escaped one US attempt in Tora Bora in Afghanistan because Afghan tribal fighters were used, many of whom were loyal to OBL, instead of US troops. The CIA unit charged with finding him was disbanded after the 2004 election. Bush never mentions OBL and when asked simply replies that he has no idea where he is.
Even though January 20, 2009 will be a joyous day it could be a dangerous one because the deal will expire.
