  • Might be a side effect of adjusting the hair color

    L'Oreal sells hair dyes in a large variety of shades. They often use the same model for multiple shades, but use photo lightening/darkening to change the hair in the picture to match the shade being sold.

    Certainly you'll notice that Beyonce's hair as well as her skin are lightened in this advertisement. The skin color change may have been a side effect of changing the hair color.

    Others have pointed out the difference between strategy and tactics. Schaller is arguing that the investment in voter registration is bad strategy, but his argument is tactical, not strategic. He looks only at the results of the last election. This was the mistake the Democratic leadership has made since 1990 -- targeting only "close" districts and leaving large parts of the country uncontested. Over time the number of districts that were uncontested grew. If the Democrats had only won those districts targetted by the DCCC in 2006 they would have only the slimest of House majorities and still would be a minority in the Senate. Fortunately, Dean's 50 state strategy was in effect and the Democrats now have a bigger House majority than the Republicans have had since 1932, plus the Senate.

    Remember that investment in voter registration is not for one election only, but helps to create a voter base that can, if maintained, grow and be used for many future elections. This is how the Republicans built their base. They funded conservative churches and political organizations, often in very Democratic areas, not expecting immediate payback but building a base for the future.

    Now, the question Schaller should be asking is whether the deep south is the right place to prioritize voter registration funds. Looking at the long term, there is a case to be made that better places for investment are places such as Texas, with big Republican edge but a fast-growing Democratic demographic, as well as places like Colorado and New Mexico. Even Kansas and Nebraska could produce some surprises.

  • Great article, great speech ... the Obama fall campaign begins

    The article summed up the speech very well.

    Folks, we Democrats have been wringing our hands about the Obama campaign for the last month or two. I'm as guilty as anyone. But somehow I've been hopeful that the Obama team has a plan for the fall campaign that will kick McCain butt.

    Two things. First, consider Obama's primary campaign. When he started the odds against him were tremendous. Money, name recognition, personal connections in the Democratic machinery, endorsements -- Hillary had all of these in spades. Obama's team, through a combination of near-perfect strategy and tactics and incredible organization skills pulled off a near miracle. An Obama campaign is not ad hoc or shoot-from-the-hip. There is a focus on the long-range goal and a plan to get there.

    Second, consider Barak Obama himself, and how he's reacted to the crises he's faced. When the Rev Wright scandal came out he took a few days off them gave the speech of his life. This is a guy who comes through in the clutch.

    I have to think the Obama team knows exactly what they are up against in the election. They have to have a very clear reading on the voter mood, and why there are so many undecideds. They are fully prepared for what the McCain campaign. They've been using the months of June-August to set a foundation for their fall campaign, which begins now. The international trip, the economic summit, the father's day speech ... all these events provide a foundation that Obama can and will draw on in the fall campaign. Meanwhile, McCain is throwing every bit of slime at Obama and in the process eroding McCain's formerly positive image as a centrist who "reaches across the aisle".

    This should be a fun fall.
