  • Galileo was out of line

    [Read the article: Intelligent designer]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

When we tie Intelligent Design back into Science, we will have come full circle. It becomes unnecessary to research fact when supposition will work. The next logical question is: When can we start burning witches again?

And the frightening thought is that these people are probably going to get their way.

  • But it lacks an American pedigree....

[Read the article: "The law is king"]

Beyond the obviously valid points made in the article, Mr. Blumenthal is a pleasure to read. His writing is picturesque and graceful. He gives me a reason to look forward to Thursdays.

  • War Room

[Read the article: Report: Bush's spy briefings appear to have been illegal]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

As a faithful reader of Mr. Grieve's column, I always feel the appropriate outrage at the excesses of these people that have laid the seeds for the destruction of all that has been good about our country. But after the daily drumbeat of arrogance, lying, corruption, illegal behavior and personal attacks, I am left with a feeling of frustration akin to the kid who knows the world is an unfair place.

What good is knowing you're right when you've lost the war?

  • Great job Salon!

[Read the article: Bush withdraws nominee]

Its wonderful to see the effects of a free press making even one small dent in our cesspool of a government. Kudos!

  • War? What war?

[Read the article: Murtha: Marines killed civilians "in cold blood"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

This, too, shall disappear into the sublime darkness that is the American way of life in the 21st century.

  • deficit games

    [Read the article: Deficit games]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Maybe you can't fool all of the people all of the time but you can fool enough of them enough of the time to keep yourself afloat. There are still at least two and a half years of this nonsense to go. And does anyone really believe this bunch aren't going to maintain control of both houses? And does anyone think these folks haven't developed a plan to hold onto the Executive Branch? Say what you will, they plan and execute with incredible precision.

    Word for the day: tergiversate

  • do we really want this supreme court to take many cases/

[Read the article: Phoning it in]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

While it does seem ludicrous on its face that our government has been putting in so few hours, in the case of the courts and the Republican Congress, the truth is that we are better off this way. The more cases these reactionaries have to handle, the more they can stomp on our rights.

  • Why wait for Gates?

[Read the article: Don't rush him. He's listening]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Its interesting that Bush attributed the delay in establishing a strategy to his desire to allow the new DefSec to have some input. So, in essence, we stay the current bloody, unproductive course in order to satisfy Rummy's vanity; so he can outlast MacNamara.

  • And we love to watch

[Read the article: So long, sugar tits!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Absolutely hysterical. Thank you.

  • What's knot to love?

[Read the article: "Un Lun Dun"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I don't read for critical evaluation and I don't stick to any one genre. I just like a good story. Perdido Street Station, his second, just blew me away. The psychedelic moths? How could a place so fantastic possibly exist? How could a place so well detailed not exist? I'm in the middle of Un Lun Dun and still love Mr. Mieville's ability to create the unique.

  • If Bush wins...

[Read the article: What Bush is hiding]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It will be very interesting to see if the Supremes will go against their own precedents denying executive privilege when National Security isn't involved. A decision more interesting than OJ! How pitiful that we could even consider the Court might itself be so politicized that they would consider supporting Bush's position after failing to do so for Clinton. For any rationale person, it boggles the mind; yet you have to know that Scalia, Thomas and Alito will support Bush. Anybody want to put odds on the probability?

  • Limping into Tehran

[Read the article: Army deployed seriously injured troops]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Can't you just see Little Georgie's handlers convulsing? Iran's seizing of the Brits is the direct provocation they've been hoping for but there is no military left to play with. Where do they go? Draft? Increased taxes? How frustrating for them.

And guys, these are people. They signed up for the military for whatever reasons they may have had, but they did not ask to be abused and they do not deserve to be abused. Cut 'em some slack.

  • Sad but true

[Read the article: Breaking the Iraq stalemate]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Hey, did you guys hear that OJ got busted again?

  • shysters

[Read the article: Why I didn't invest in subprime mortgages]

I like that. You start out talking about our propensity to get-rich-quick and manage to close with an accurate slam on little georgie.

    Hi Alex,

As a subscriber and long time reader, I'd like to wish you luck with the column. One comment I'd make is that what I enjoy most about the blog is its ability to provide quick editorial snacks during my work day. The key, though, is to be brief. You're at your best when you say more with less.

  • US Gov't as landlords

[Read the article: The complete (though ever-changing) elite consensus over the financial collapse]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

As to the weak claim that "maybe the gov't will actually make money down the line as the real estate market improves", who is going to maintain the Gov't owned homes so that they maintain their value? Is the Gov't going to hire people to mow the lawns? To keep the doors locked to protect the copper tubing and fixtures? These houses will be doomed to dilapidation and their values destroyed.
